Event: |
Passion to be performed on Good Friday
Musical Context: Motets & Chorales for Palm Sunday, Holy Week |
Composed: |
Leipzig, 1731. Mostly of the music lost, except for 1 movement revised in BWV 248 and 7 movements in original form in cantatas BWV 198 and BWV 54
1st performance: March 23, 1731 - Leipzig
2nd performance: March 27, 1734 - Leipzig (2nd version)
The 2009 Bach Jahrbuch contains an article on an interesting finding, made in a library in St Petersburg (Russia): the text of a 2nd (?) performance of a Markus-Passion in 1744, conducted by Bach in Leipzig. The text found indicares that Bach included 2 additional arias and changed the text at certain places. This will not add any new music to this passion, called a passion-pasticcio, the remnants of which were described in the NBA KB II/9 (published in 2000) pp. 106-109. |

Discussions |
October 1999 - June 2001; Week of April 1, 2012 |
Reconstructions |
1. Diethard Hellmann completed a reconstruction in 1964 based on parodies and chorale harmonization choices only. A 1976 edition includes additional choruses to be used with a spoken delivery of the gospel text. Carus-Verlag published Diethard Hellmann's work with newly composed recitatives and arias by Johannes H.E Koch in 1999. The orchestration for the work matches that of BWV 198.
2. Simon Heighes's reconstruction is completed in 1995. This is recorded by Jörg Breiding for Rondeau.
3. Andor Gomme edited a 1997 reconstruction published by Bärenreiter that utilizes BWV 198 and choruses from BWV 204, BWV 216, BWV 120a, and BWV 54. The recitatives and turba choruses are drawn from a St Mark Passion traditionally attributed to Reinhard Keiser, which J.S. Bach himself adapted for use in Weimar in 1713.
4. In 1998 Rudolf Kelber reconstructed the St Mark Passion as a pasticcio: he completed J.S. Bach's fragments using arias from cantatas by J.S. Bach, recitatives by Reinhard Keiser, motives by Georg Philipp Telemann and his own additions.
5. In 1999, Ton Koopman presented a reconstruction that does not utilize BWV 198, but instead draws on Es ist nichts Gesundes an meinem Leibe, BWV 25 (opening chorus) and Siehe zu, daß deine Gottesfurcht nicht Heuchelei sei, BWV 179 (turba choruses) and his own freely composed recitatives.
6. In 2010, harpsichordist and conductor Jörn Boysen made a new version utilizing choruses and arias from BWV 198 and an aria from BWV 54. He composed all missing recitatives, turba choirs and one aria. This version has been performed in the Netherlands and Germany in 2011 and 2012.
7. In the same year, Alexander Ferdinand Grychtolik made a first edition of the late version of the St Mark Passion (from 1744) as a stylistically consistent reconstruction, published by Edition Peters. The text of this unknown later version was discovered in 2009 in Saint Petersburg. In this version, J.S. Bach added two arias and he made small changes in Picander's text.
8. In 2015, Organist Freddy Eichelberger offered a second reconstruction of the 1744 version based on the BWV 198 and composed all missing recitatives, turba choirs and some chorals. This version was written in collaboration with the musicologist Laurent Guillo, the editor Sharon Rosner and Itay Jedlin who performed it with Le Concert Étranger at the 2015 Ambronay Festival, concert filmed by French national television.

Markus-Passion BWV 247
On this recording, instead of inserting a reconstruction or newly-composed version of Bach’s lost setting of the recitative, St Mark’s gospel is spoken and accompanied by sounds which indicate the fragmentary nature of the work. |
