The Swiss counter-tenor anf former boy soprano, Terry Wey, knew that he wanted to become an opera-singer, after seeing his first and still favourite opera, Il Trovatore by G. Verdi, at age 4. He joined his first choir, The Berner Kinderchor, at age 6 performing in La Boheme in the Bernese City Opera house and other various concerts. He was the soloist in Elijah (Felix Mendelssohn) in Berne, Zürich and Basle. At age 7, he joined Knabenchor Roggwil under R. Favre. Here he performed the part of first page in W.A. Mozart's Magic Flute in Baden for the first time, followed by concert tours through Italy singing J.S. Bach's St. Matthews Passion (BWV 244) with the Orchestre Symphonique Neuchatelois and performances at the "Goetheanum" and the "Tonhalle" in Zürich.
After seeing a TV-documentary on the Wiener Sängerknaben, Terry Wey auditioned and was accepted to attend Vienna's preparations-choir. From 1994 (or 1995) until 1998, he was a member of the Schubert choir, one of the four concert choirs of the Wiener Sängerknaben performing in more than 300 concerts. He soon became a soloist, eventually singing solos in all four choirs in tours around the world. With the choir he was soloist for W.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass and Schubert's Magnificat. He also appeared in the film L'or des Anges.
After leaving the Wiener Sängerknaben in 1998, Terry Wey recorded two solo albums , "Born to sing" and "O Holy Night". He has continued to sing after his voice break and features on his brother's solo album (Lorin Wey - Boy Soprano) singing tenor and with Lorin Wey on the album.
From 2000 to 2002, Terry Wey sang in the Choral Schola of the Imperial Chapel in Vienna. The group was made up of ex-Wiener Sängerknaben. He also returned to the Vienna State Opera as one of the four midshipmen in their new production of Billy Budd, by Benjamin Britten. Besides working on developing his tenor voice, he has discovered that he can still sing alto and soprano, which he often did with the Capella Clementina, a small group singing Renaissance masses in the church, Maria am Gestade. In the fall of 2002, he sang soprano in concerts and a recording of Josquin des Pres’ Missa di Dadi with Rene Clemencic.
Terry Wey studied piano at the Conservatory of Music in Vienna and regularly gave concerts accompanying his brother, Lorin, a boy soprano. In the summer of 2001 they had concerts in USA, Switzerland, France and Germany. In August 2002, they performed at music festivals in Pennsylvania. Before that, he attended the Fort Bend Boys’ Choir summer camp and accompany their rehearsals. In February 2000, he completed composing a violin concerto. Since then, he has concentrated more on conducting. In March 2002, he conducted performances of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater for Soprano, Alto, Strings and BC. |
