Gabriel Díaz (Counter-tenor)

Born: Seville, Spain

The Spanish counter-tenor, Gabriel Díaz, began his music studies on the piano, continuing later with singing and historical performance. His vocal training began at the Coro Barroco de Andalucía (Andalusian Baroque Choir), where he received lessons from Carlos Mena, Lambert Climent and Lluis Vilamajó. In 2005 he studied at London Trinity College of Music with counter-tenor Timothy Travers-Brown, Philip Thorby and Stephen Preston.

Gabriel Díaz performs regularly with many orchestras and ensembles such as La La Capella Reial de Catalunya (Director: Jordi Savall), Choeur de Chambre de Namur (Director: Jean Tubéry), La Grande Chapelle, Los Músicos de su Alteza, Vox Luminis (Director: Lionel Meunier), Les Ambassadeurs (Director: Alexis Kossenko) and Musica Saeculorum, under conductors such as Jordi Savall, Leonardo García-Alarcón, Lionel Meunier, Marco Vitale, Philipp von Steinaecker or Alexis Kossenko, among others.

Gabriel Díaz has performed in a large number of festivals in Spain, Portugal, France, England, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Estonia, Poland, Norway, Morocco, Mexico, Colombia, Peru and the United States, as well as in major venues such as the Opéra Nationale de Montpellier, Opéra de Reims, Centre for Fine Arts (Brussels), Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona), deSingel (Antwerp), De Doelen (Rotterdam), Konzerthaus (Viena), Warsaw Chamber Opera, National Theatre (London), Teatro Mayor (Bogotá) or Nezahualcóyotl in Mexico City.

Gabriel Díaz has sung the role of Andronico in George Frideric Handel's Tamerlano with the French orchestra Les Ambassadeurs and conductor Alexis Kossenko at the Poznan Opera House, to great public and critical acclaim. He covered the title role in G.F. Handel's Orlando at the Welsh National Opera with Rinaldo Alessandrini and has recently made his debut at the Warsaw Chamber Opera, singing the role of Ircano in Semiramide Riconosciuta by Leonardo Vinci under the baton of Marco Vitale.

Gabriel Díaz has been invited to give master-classes at the University of Málaga, Centro de Iniciativas Culturales (University of Sevilla), Muestra de Música Antigua Castillo de Aracena, Coro de la Sociedad Musical de Sevilla, Centro Nacional de las Artes (CENART) and Sistema Nacional de Fomento Musical in Mexico. In 2015 he was selected among dozens of candidates to take part in the Haendel Residency of the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, tutored by Emmanuelle Haïm. In September 2015, he was chosen by online magazine Bachtrack as one of the young hopes illustrating the month dedicated to counter-tenors.

Gabriel Díaz has taken part in many recordings for Almaviva, Alia Vox, Enchiriadis, Arsis, NB Musica, Ricercar, Lauda Musica and Alpha, some of them winners of awards such as the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Critics' Choice Gramophone, 5 Diapason, Diapason D'or and FestClásica.

Curious about other repertoires and artistic manifestations, Gabriel Díaz has explored other ways of expression such as the jazz-flamenco-classical fusion of the show Zambra Barroca with the Looking Back Orchestra and prestigious jazzist, recorder player and improviser Andreas Prittwitz at the Auditorio Nacional de Música (Madrid). He has also performed in the dance show Until the Lions with the Akram Khan Company, founded and directed by Akran Khan, one of the most celebrated contemporary dance coreographers.

Future engagements include Galatea in G.F. Handel's Aci, Galatea e Polifemo with Andreas Spering in Seville and Medoro in La Lisarda by Giovanni Battista Mariani with Rogerio Gonçalves in the Donaufestwochen (Austria).
