The Italian counter-tenor, Raffaele Pé, started his studies in singing and organ when he was a chorister in Lodi Cathedral, from the age of 6 under Pietro Panzetti. He then continued his training in London with Colin Baldy and Nicholas Clapton, and in Bologna with Fernando Cordeiro Opa. He attended masterclasses with Sarah Walker, James Bowman, and Sonia Prina. In 2009 he was chosen by Sir John Eliot Gardiner for the Monteverdi Choir Apprenticeship Scheme, in 2012 he was selected for the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme in Aldeburgh.
Raffaele Pé has already worked with many leading conductors. These include, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Paul McCreesh, René Jacobs, Nicholas McGegan, Claudio Cavina, Christophe Coin and Leonardo García-Alarcón. With them he has performed in some major theatres and concert halls around Europe and abroad.
Presented by the critics as “one of the most interesting countertenor voices of his generation” (L’Opera, November 2014), Raffaele Pé is today among the Italian emerging interpreters for the repertoire that spans from Recitar Cantando to the late operatic works of the 18th Century. Highlights include, his recent debut at Berlin Philharmonie and Bologna Festival with his solo recital The Medici Castrato, dedicated early Baroque Italian vocal music, as well as his appearances at Arena di Verona in Orff’s Carmina Burana, directed by Andrea Battistoni, in Tokyo in the role of Ottone in Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea, in Barga as Leone for the Gasparini’s Bajazet (Glossa). Under the baton of Sir John Eliot Gardiner he was among the protagonists of Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine, he sung George Frideric Handel’s Israel in Egypt for Nicholas McGegan and J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) for Christophe Coin.
Increasingly in demand on opera stages, future engagements include the co-protagonist role of Delio in the premiere in modern times of Francesco Cavalli’s Veremonda (USA, 2015), Santino in Leonardo Alarcon’s pasticcio Amore Siciliano, and Arioco in Michelangelo Falvetti’s Nabucco, with appearances at the Opéra Royal de Versailles and BOZAR in Bruxelles. Among his recording projects Raffaele will sing the Evangelist in the world premiere recording of Gaetano Veneziano’s Passione secondo San Giovanni for I Turchini di Toni Florio (Glossa).
Raffaele Pé's performances and recordings have been broadcasted by some of the major international radio stations and televisions, including BBC, MezzoTV, Culturebox, Radio France, RAI, RSI, ORF e Polskie Radio. He has recorded for Harmonia Mundi, Glossa, Arcana, Resonus Classics, and ORF. His solo debut album "Bella Dama", was released in November 2012 for Resonus Classics. In autumn 2014 was released for Glossa his second work "The Medici Castrato, a Homage to Gualberto Magli". |
