The Finnish soprano, Uli Kontu-Korhonen, graduated with a Master of Music degree from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in 1991. She has been studying early music as a teacher in his master-classes with Evelyn Tubb, Michael Fields, Stephen Stubbs, Suzie LeBlanc and singers from The Hilliard Ensemble.
Uli Korhonen is a versatile musician specialized in early music, especially in European medieval music. She has a bright soprano on the stage, which rings at angelic heights, always retaining its beautiful color. She is a powerful interpreter who sings the story openly by communicating with the public. She also was a member of the Ring Ensemble of Finland. In addition to singing, she plays medieval instruments in her solo program; dulcimer, symphonie, organetto (portable organ), bowed psaltary and an ancient Finnish 5-string instrument kantele, and kantele.
During her career, Uli Korhonen has been giving solo and ensemble concerts in Finland and Europe Since 1997, she has sung as a soloist with the Medieval Music Ensemble Oliphant. The ensemble's repertoire covers music from the 11th century monodia to the polyphonic ars nova. Oliphant has released a lot of previously unknown travertine music. The band's "Joie fine" chansons pieuses (2006), Gace Brulé's music (2004), and "Praemia lucis Valon lahja" (2000), have aroused the public and critics alike with their improvisational and colorful music. During 2008-2009 season, Oliphant became familiar with German medieval music and produced the program "Herz, Prich! – Sydän, Murru!" concert and recordings. The album was released in March 2010.
In addition to his own solo concerts, Uli Korhonen has been conducting a medieval liturgical drama, Ludus Danielis, and Ordo Virtutum by Hildegard Bingen. She has worked as a musician in several theater and dance productions, where medieval music has played a central role. In addition to performing in the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque music, she has also sung with jazz and folk musicians and performed new music. Indeed, various cross-artistic productions are an integral part of her artist personality. In addition to her home country, she has given concerts in several European countries. She has made several albums for Alba Records and recorded for the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation. Her solo album "Praemia lucis Valon lahja" was released in May 2008 on Alba records and contains Hildegard von Bingen's songs as well as old Finnish hymns and folk songs.
Uli Korhonen teaches early music at the Turun musiikkiakatemiassa (Turku Music Academy) and conducts a female choir Tapiolan Laulu. She has also specialized in music in health care settings and works as a hospital musician in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Helsinki. The Suomen kulttuurirahasto (Finnish Cultural Foundation) has awarded her a grant of the year 2005 and a three-year grant for artistic work in 2006-2009. |
