Peter de Groot (Counter-tenor) |
Born: January 13, 1957 - Westmaas, Holland |
The Dutch counter-tenor (altus), Peter de Groot, studied with the distinguished singing teacher Aafje Heynis at the Arnhem Conservatoire; then sang for some years with Collegium Vocale Gent under Philippe Herreweghe and in specialized solo ensembles such as the Huelgas Ensemble (Paul van Nevel).
Peter de Groot sings occasionally with the Nederlands Kamerkoor and is a permanent member of Ton Koopman's Amsterdam Baroque Choir. Under Ton Koopman's direction he also sang as soloist in concerts and several CD's. As a soloist he is renowned for his moving Bach interpretations. With the solo Ensemble of the Nederlandse Bachvereniging he revived forgotten music of German pre-Bach masters. He also gives many recitals dedicated to renaissance solo repertoire and contemporary music. Several Dutch and Belgian composers dedicated new works to him.
Peter de Groot is also the top-voice singer and artistic leader of the Egidius Kwartet, an internationally high esteemed male vocal quartet devoted to the performance of music by 16th century and contemporary composers of the Low Countries.
Peter de Groot is active also as a musicologist. As the artistic leader of the Egidius Kwartet he is responsible for the research and preparation of the repertoire. He also encourages contemporary composers to write new pieces for the group. In the musicological field De Groot proudly considers himself as a pupil of maestro Paul van Nevel. Thanks to De Groot's research, the work of Emperor Charles V's last two chapel-masters, Cornelius Canis and Nicolas Payen, has been rediscovered, transcribed and recorded. He prepared a program of chansons by Josquin des Prez, based on recent research by the renowned musicologist Jaap van Benthem. On De Groot's initiative, the Egidius Kwartet undertook a major project involving the first performance and recording of Tielman Susato’s complete Musyck Boexkens.
In 2004 Peter de Groot had the honour to prepare a CD dedicated to the chansons of Thomas Crecquillon with help from the CMM editor Prof. Laura Youens. This project was supported by the George Washington University. In 2005 the forgotten work of the composer Gheerkin de Hondt was revived, thanks to his collaboration with musicologist Véronique Roelvink. Recently De Groot and his group worked on a first ever recording of all the Dutch songs of the Chansonier of Lauweryn van Watervliet in collaboration with dr. Johan Oosterman of the Nijmegen University. |
