The Norwegian baritone, Johannes Weisser, studied at the Music Conservatory in Copenhagenand at the Royal Danish Academy of Opera in Copenhagen with Susanna Eken. In autumn 2002 he started his studies at the Royal Opera Academy in Copenhagen. He graduated in 2005.He has been awarded the Ruud-Wallenbergs Singers Stipend in both 1999 and 2000.
Johannes Weisser has quickly made a name for himself as one of the most exciting up-and-coming Scandinavian singers. In the spring of 2004, at the age of 23, he made his debut at the Norwegian National Opera as well as at the Komische Oper Berlin, in both houses as Masetto in Don Giovanni. Since then he has appeared as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte at the Salzburg Festival, the title role inDon Giovanni at the Innsbrucker Festwochen der alten Musik, Baden-Baden, Komische Oper Berlin, Norwegian National Opera and in concert performances in Paris, Brussels and Cologne, Giove in Cavalli’s La Calisto at Théâtre de La Monnaie in Brussels, Mr. Flint in Billy Bud at Opera Bilbao, Tobit in Haydn’s Il ritorno di Tobia in Rome, and Valens in George Frideric Handel’s Theodora in Cuenca. He has also sung Papageno in The Magic Flute, Schaunard in La Bohème, Plutone and Pastore 4 in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeoand, a gala with arias by Mozart at the Norwegian National Opera, Leporello in Don Giovanni and King Theseus in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Royal Danish Opera, Adonis in John Blow’s Venus and Adonis at the Flanders Festival Bruges, and Valens in G.F. Handel’s Theodora in Cologne as well as in Ambronay.
Johannes Weisser is a much sought after concert and oratorio singer and he regularly appears in concert venues and festivals throughout Europe. He has already built a considerable repertoire that spans music from the early 17th Century works of Monteverdi up to 20th Century works of Weill and B. Britten. His concert and oratorio repertoire includes J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion (BWV 245), Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), St. Mark Passion (BWV 247), and several Cantatas, Mozart’s Requiem, Coronation Mass, and Mass In C Minor, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, Heinrich Schütz’ St. John Passion, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. He is an exceptionally communicative Lied-singer. His concerts have attracted much attention and have been highly praised, notably the concerts with the pianist Leif Ove Andsnes.
Johannes Weisser has worked with conductors such as Rinaldo Alessandrini, Alfredo Bernardini, Fabio Biondi, Iona Brown, Francesco Corti, Alan Curtis, Ottavio Dantone, Stéphane Denève, Laurence Equilbey, Adam Fischer, Philippe Herreweghe, René Jacobs, Fredrik Malmberg, Juanjo Mena, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Kirill Petrenko, George Petrou, Daniel Reuss, Kwame Ryan, Andreas Spering, Christoph Spering and Andrew Wilder. He has sung with such orchestras as the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Stavanger Symfoniorkester, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, and Copenhagen Consort, among others.
Johannes Weisser has sung Mozart’s Mass in C Minor with both Stavanger Symfoniorkester and the conductor Philippe Herreweghe, and with Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and the conductor Iona Brown. In the spring of 2002 he participated in a staged version of J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion (BWV 245) in Bodø. Engagements in the 2002-2003 season included Ceprano in Rigoletto at the Nordland Music Festival, Haydn’s the Creation in Oslo, J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) in Stavanger, Oslo, Bergen and Bodø, G.F. Handel’s Messiah in Hamar, and the arias in St. John Passion (BWV 245) in Trondheim. In 2004 he made his debut at the Norwegian National Opera and the Komische Oper Berlin as Masetto in Don Giovanni. Other engagements have included title role Don Giovanni, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte and Schaunard in La Bohème at the Norwegian National Opera, and Leporello Don Giovanni and King Theseus in A Midsummer Night's Dream) at Royal Danish Opera. In 2006 he sang the title role in Don Giovanni with the conductor René Jacobs in Innsbruck, Paris, Brussels, Cologne and Baden-Baden. He also recorded the role for Harmonia Mundi, and the recording was released in September 2007. Engagements in 2007-2009 included title role in Don Giovanni at the Komische Oper Berlin, concerts and recordings of Georg Philipp Telemann’s Brockes Passion, TWV 5:1 as well as Haydn's Die Schöpfung, both with René Jacobs, Cantatas by J.S. Bach in Innsbruck with the Freiburger Barockorchester, Mozart's Mass in C Minor with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and Guglielmo in a filmed version of Così fan Tutte.
Engagements in 2010 included Guglielmo in Così fan tutte at Opéra national du Rhin Strasbourg as well as in semi-staged performances in Paris, Brussels and Lisbon, recording as well as concerts in Vienna and La Coruña of Licaone in G.F. Handel’s Giove in Argo, J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion (BWV 245) in Bordeaux, Cantatas by J.S. Bach in France, Germany and Switzerland with the Freiburger Barockorchester, Ramiro in Ravel's L'heure espagnole at the Edinburgh International Festival, G.F. Handel’s Messiah in Madrid, Rossini's Petite messe solennelle in Kristiansand and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem in Moss. 2011 has started with Garzia in Attilio Ariosti’s La Fede nei tradimenti in Vienna, Arsitobolo in G.F. Handel’s Berenice in Vienna Agamemnon in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide in Athens with the conductor George Petrou and arias by Mozart with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.
Johannes has recorded the title role in Don Giovanni, G.P. Telemann’s Brockes Passion, TWV 5:1, and Haydn’s Die Schöpfung with René Jacobs for Harmonia Mundi, Haydn’s Applausus with Andreas Spering (Capriccio), Licaone in G.F. Handel’s Giove in Argo with Alan Curtis (to be released), and a CD with songs by Grieg for Simax. |
