The American tenor, David R. Munderloh, spent 8 years (1991-1999) as a member of the world-famous American ensemble Chanticleer. With over 120 concerts each year, David has appeared on stage and in television and radio programs in Japan, Australia, Singapore, Korea, the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, as well as throughout the USA and Europe. As a soloist and with Chanticleer, he has recorded over 15 commercially released compact discs on the Teldec Classic, Lyrichord, New Albion and Koch International labels. A recording of contemporary music with Chanticleer earned him (in February 2000) a Grammy award. He gas appeard with Chanticleer with many renown orchestras, among them: the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra under Hugh Wolff and Christopher Hogwood. He has also worked in commercial studio work, recently having recorded music for Olympic figure skater Brian Boitano.
David Munderloh completed three years as a William J. Fulbright Fellow studying early music performance and theory at the renown Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland. At the Schola he worked closely with, among others: Gerd Türk, Evelyn Tubb, Richard Levitt and Joshua Rifkin, also having received coaching from Johann Sonnleitner and René Jacobs. Invaluable was his close work with Anthony Rooly; work which continues to guide his interpretation of English Lute Songs.
Currently lives in Basel, Switzerland, David Munderloh has appeared on stage throughout the Far East and the USA as well as in most European countries and festivals. His repertoire includes music from several musical eras, from Medieval music to 19th century Lieder. He is also known for his support of and work with contemporary composers. He is regularly called upon for his dramatic interpretations of the major Cantata and Oratorio works, the Bach Evangelist rolls holding a central position in his repertoire. On stage he has received acclaim for his portrayal of the Madwoman in Benjamin Britten’s Curlew River, as Il Marchese in Niccolò Piccinni's opera La Buona Figliola, as Acis and Damon in George Frideric Handel’s Acis and Galatea, Palide in Oreste (G.F. Handel), Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas (Purcell) and as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni (W.A. Mozart).
David Munderloh also appears regularly as a soloist with ‘The Harp Consort’ (Andrew Lawrence-King). Because ensemble work is still important to David Munderloh, he still performs throughout Europe with Dominique Vellard’s ‘Ensemble Gilles Binchois’. He had engagements to perform with Crawford Young's 'Ferrara Ensemble', and has recorded and sung as a guest with I Fagiolini and The Consort of Musicke under the direction of Anthony Rooley.
