The Dutch baritone, Matthijs Mesdag, began his singing studies with Hein Meens at the Conservatorium of Maastricht. He continued his studies with Margreet Honig at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam, where he graduated in 1989. Between 1991 and 1993 he took courses at the 'Britten-Pears school for advanced musical studies' in Aldeburgh (UK) with Diane Forlano, Sarah Walker and Anthony Rolfe-Johnson. Master-classes followed with René Jacobs, Bernard Kruysen, Jard van Nes, Udo Reinemann, Sarah Walker and Evelyn Lear. Currently he takes lessons by David Pittman-Jennings in Paris Brian Masuda.
Matthijs Mesdag has a wide experience as a concert, opera and lieder singing. His oratorio repertoire ranges from of Monteverdi, Heinrich Schütz and the North German organ school, through J.S. Bach and George Frideric Handel oratorios, Haydn and W.A. Mozart to Ralph Vaughan Williams, Xenakis, Barend Schuurman and McMillian. Opera roles that he has performed so far are:
Avvocato in Un re in ascolto by Luciano Berio, Hans in Een Job van onze tijd by Wim de Ruiter, Florestan in Véronique by André Messager, Johann Mattes in Die Bürgschaft by Kurt Weill, Oskar Leeflang in Die Fahrradstandoper by Gustavo Trujillio and Zoroastre in Sémiramis by André Cardinal Destouches.
Matthijs Mesdag has worked with conductors as Ton Koopman, Arnold Östman, Barend Schuurman, Heinz Friesen, Gerard Akkerhuis, Jaap Hillen, Arie van Beek, Krijn Koetsveld, Huub Kerstens and Stephen Harrap. Since is foundation in 1992, he is a member of the Amsterdam Baroque Choir under the direction of Ton Koopman.
On CD-recordings Matthijs Mesdag can be head as a soloist in Mozart's Krönungsmesse and Vesperae Solennes de Confessore with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir under the under the direction of Ton Koopman. Since 1994 he has appeared in Lieder recitals for the company "Vrienden van het Lied" together with the pianist Dido Keuning. |
