The German bass-baritone, Hanno Müller-Brachmann, began his musical training in Basel and in Freiburg. He studied under Professor Ingeborg Most and took the Berlin Lied class from Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He received particular encouragement from Professor Rudolf Piernay, who still supports him today.
Following his success in several international competitions, Hanno Müller-Brachmann has performed in concert halls throughout Europe, Japan, and the USA. He makes regular guest appearances at festivals such as, Schleswig-Holstein and Salzburg, as is partners in orchestras such as the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and Concerto Köln. He has collaborated with conductors such with such conductors as Marcus Creed, Heinz Holliger, Donald C. Runnicles, Bruno Weil, Frans Brüggen, Herbert Blomstedt, Philippe Herreweghe, Sir Neville Marriner, Michael Gielen, Kurt Masur, Helmuth Rilling, Peter Schreier, Eiji Oué, Kent Nagano, and Riccardo Chailly.
Hanno Müller-Brachmann has sung J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with the London Philharmonic under Kurt Masur, Rossini’s Stabat Mater with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields under Neville Marriner; J.S. Bach’s St John Passion (BWV 245) with the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra under John Eliot Gardiner; Haydn’s Nelson Mass at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival under Neville Marriner, Berlioz Romeo et Juliette with the Berlin Staatskappelle under Luisi, L.v. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Christoph von Dohnányi and L.v. Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Rossini’s Stabat Mater with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi under Riccardo Chailly.
Hanno Müller-Brachmann made his operatic debut in 1996 in Georg Philipp Telemann’s Orpheus under René Jacobs at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin ‘Unter den Linden’, where he has been a member of the ensemble since 1998 and where he is currently singing the great W.A. Mozart roles of Leporello, Figaro, Guglielmo and Papageno under Daniel Barenboim. His other roles there include Schaunard (La Boheme) under Jordan and Iwan Jakowlewitsch (Die Nase) under Kent Nagano. He has appeared as a guest opera singer in Basel, Lausanne, Madrid, Paris and, for the first time in 1999, at the Munich State Opera under Zubin Mehta.
In addition to opera and oratorio, Hanno Müller-Brachmann also devotes himself to lied and can be heard in recitals in Berlin at both the Staatsoper and Philharmonie. He has given song recitals also in Hamburg, Paris and Tokyo, among other places. His many festival appearances include the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg where last year (2003) he sang Winterreise, accompanied by Philippe Jordan and this year (2004) sang Dichterliebe accompanied by Burkhard Kehring.
A highlight of the 1999-2000 season was the premiere of Elliott Carter’s opera What next (Harry or Larry) in Berlin under Daniel Barenboim, with which Hanno Müller-Brachmann also made his debut at the Chicago Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York in February 2000. This season (2004-2005) his roles at the Deutsche Staatsoper include Graf (Der ferne Klang), Tomsky (The Queen of Spades) and Golaud (Pelléas et Mélisande). He has sung Oreste (Elektra) and Guglielmo at the Bavarian State and will return to Munich to sing Papageno in the new production of Die Zauberflöte at the 2005 Munich Festival. This year (2004) he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera as Guglielmo under Seiji Ozawa and makes his debut at San Francisco Opera in the same role under Michael Gielen. His future operatic engagements also include W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni for the Vienna State Opera and for the Klangbogen Festival.
Hanno Müller-Brachmann has also appeared in various radio and television productions and has recorded several CD's for Harmonia Mundi, including a Schubert recital disc.
From 2006 to 2011, Hanno Müller-Brachmann also taught singing as the main subject at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin and was chairman of the from 2008 to 2011 Bundeswettbewerbs Gesang e. V., whose board he is now a member of. He is also a member of the jury at the Internationalen Bachwettbewerb Leipzig and at the Internationalen Wettbewerb "Schubert und die Moderne" in Graz. In the winter semester of 2011-2012 he took over a professorship for singing at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe.
