Explanation |
a. Performance Date: When there is not a definite date, the performance was put in the earliest possible date.
b. Performance Place: The performance place is the one noted by the Year, unless otherwise written in the entry. |
Comments on ascertaining the correct chronology of the cantatas |
a. The information is based mainly upon OCC (see Sources below), but that it has been updated and corrected where necessary in order to represent the results of ongoing Bach scholarship.
b. Concerning actual performance dates given. In a rather small number of instances there is more concrete evidence for the performance in the form of cantata text booklets printed for use by the church congregation. These (there are only a few of these booklets extant) booklets not only give specific dates of the cantatas performed, but also indicate in which church and for which church service (time of day) they were to be performed. Somewhat less reliable is an actual date, which Bach had written on the completed score. This simply indicates the date of completion, not necessarily the actual date of performance. Frequently the liturgical Sunday or holiday is marked on the cover containing the score and original parts and/or it is marked at the top of the 1st page of the score. Without any date indicated on the score or parts, it still must be determined where it may have been performed (Weimar, Leipzig, etc.) and which year such a performance may have taken place. For this it is crucial to determine as closely and correctly as possible:
1 specific watermarks of the paper that was used
2. which copyists were used for copying out the parts
3. changes in the style of handwriting of Bach and the copyists
A repeat performance of any of Bach’s cantatas can not be excluded even if there is no indication of such in the above list. Such an unlisted repeat performance of a cantata is probable but no specific evidence can be found to substantiate it as yet.
c. The absence of indications that many cantatas did not have a repeat performance does not imply that no further performances had taken place. This only means that no documentation (changes/additions in the score and original parts, historical evidence from published cantata text booklets or newspaper accounts) is available. Without such evidence there is no basis upon which to conjecture even a general 5 or 10 year period in which such a repeat performance may have taken place.
d. To put it another way: additional cantata performances after the 1st performance are likely, but the lack of evidence does not even allow any speculation as to when such performances may have taken place. The NBA KBs usually express this situation succinctly as follows: “Spätere Wiederholungen sind anzunehmen, aber nicht belegt” [“Later repeat performances can be assumed, but are not/{can not be} documented.”]
e. Another important point: rarely does Bach ever perform a work a second time without making a few changes or additions. This is usually reflected in the parts if they are available as they usually offer the best evidence of a repeat performance. The loss of toriginal parts is a severe setback for determining when repeat performances may have taken place.
f. No attempt has been made to link parodies. From a non-textual, solely musical standpoint, some cantatas (and more often, of course, individual mvts.) are not really 1st performances of the music even if they are so listed chronologically. |

Notes |
[1] According to TLM (p. 528), Cantata BWV 21 was performed during Bach's visit to Hamburg - November mid-23, 1720. This assumption was not confirmed by any other source.
[2] Cantata BWV 80 is as a reworking of cantatas BWV 80a and BWV 80b.
[3] According to the NBA KB I/3.1 p. 64, Cantata BWV 121 had a 2nd performance between Dec. 26, 1725 and Dec. 26, 1730. This is based upon a soprano part [C 1] which can not be dated anymore precisely than the time span given.
[4] A repeat performance is possible at an undetermined date based upon some autograph indications added by Bach to the brass parts.
[5] Evidence points to the fact that, on this particular Sunday, BWV 22 was performed before and BWV 23 after the sermon as Bach’s audition for the vacant position in Leipzig. There are indications that a repeat performance of BWV 22 took place c. 1735, likewise for BWV 23 a performance after 1728.
[6] The NBA KB I/8.1-2 indicates how different parts and different arrangement/selection of mvts. from this cantata BWV 182 resulted in at least 6 different performances during Bach’s lifetime:
1. Weimar (March 25, 1714)
2. Weimar (undatable, possibly performed away from the Weimar Court Chapel)
3. Weimar (undatable)
4. Leipzig (March 25, 1724)
5. Leipzig (March 21, 1728 and possibly another performance using this particular arrangement later on in Leipzig
6. Leipzig (after 1728 with the date being uncertain, again using the 1728 version)
[7] A cantata with the same name and complete text was performed by Bach on the 3rd [sic] Sunday after Trinity of 1725 as verified by the cantata text booklets found in St. Petersburg. The music, however, has been completely lost.
[8] This cantata, BWV 9, for which the text was already available in 1724, was originally intended for performance on July 16, 1724 (the 6th Sunday after Trinity) but Bach traveled with his wife to Köthen and was absent from Leipzig on that Sunday so no music was prepared. Here Bach, a decade or so later, is trying to fill in the missing gaps in his chorale cantata cycle composing this cantata in the style befitting the cycle to which it should belong.
[9] Based upon a close examination of the original parts, a repeat performance of BWV 180 in the early 1730s is very likely.
[10] This solo cantata was composed before 1725 and there are indications that it might be connected to cycle of cantatas dedicated to Prince Leopold by Bach’s predecessor at the Köthen court, Kapellmeister Augustin Reinhard Stricker whose printed 1715 cycle is entitled “6. Italienische Cantaten á Voce Sola.” BWV 203 is considered as being most likely genuine. [BWV KB I/41 p. 33 published in 2000]
