Composed by Johann Kuhnau
Based on his Latin motet Tristis est anima mea
Included, alongside movements by Georg Philipp Telemann and J.S. in a patchwork Passiontide cantata assembled by Carl Heinrich Graun c1740; it is possible that the arrangement (possibly by Johann Kuhnau himself) was already made before the incorporation.
J.S. Bach modified some of the passages in the music, and wrote obbligato instrumental accompaniment to reinforce the text.
Performed by J.S. Bach in Leipzig, c1730-35 ? |
