The Dutch conductor, Jan Stulp, studied at the Christelijk Gymnasium Leeuwarden (1973-1980). He began his musical studies with Jan de Haas and Yme G. Visser. He then studied at the Conservatories of Amsterdam (1980-1986) and Leeuwarden: piano with Femmy Schaaf, Jan Marisse Huizing and Willem Brons, choral conducting with Jan Pasveer and orchestra conducting with Joop van Zon; he studied singing with Maria van Uden
Since 1978, Jan Stulp directed several choirs, initially in Leeuwarden, later in the Randstad area. In 2008 he returned to Leeuwarden and in 2009 and was conductor of "Femmes pur Sang", for which he made many arrangement. Furthermore, in addition, he currently leads two other choirs and a chamber orchestra.
Jan Stulp has conducted many known and unknown (mainly classical) choral works, in addition to the well-known works as Elias, Paulus, Die Schöpfung, Die Jahreszeiten, Messiah, Passions by J.S. Bach, Masses by Mozart, Josef Rheinberger, Schubert, Rossini, Charles Gounod, Requiems by Gabriel Fauré, Mozart, Bruckner, etc., also newer and less frequently performed works are in his repertoire, including The Lord is my Light by George Frideric Handel, Der Tod Jesu by Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, Das Lied von der Glocke by Andreas Romberg, Das Sühnopfer des neuen Bundes by Carl Loewe, Die Passion by Heinrich von Herzogenberg, The Company of Heaven by Benjamin Britten, Missa in Es by Willem Andriessen and Requiem by Karl Jenkins, also he conducted several times J.S. Bach 's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) in the version of Robert Schumann and J.S. Bach 's Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) in the version of Felix Mendelssohn.
Jan Stulp has also conducted the Dutch premieres include Requiem and Magnificat by John Rutter, Stabat Mater by Josef Rheinberger, Requiem and Te Deum by Otto Olsson, Requiem by Charles Gounod, Les Sept Paroles du Christ by Théodore Dubois, Jazzy Magnificat by Christoph Schönherr, Requiem - Eternal Light by Howard Goodall and (in the presence of the composer) The Armed Man - A Mass For Peace by Karl Jenkins
With the choir Femmes pur Sang Jan Stulp received in Berlin on April 14, 2012 the prize for best director at the International Pop Choral Festival, held at the Kammermusiksaal the Berliner Philharmonie. |
