Der Leipziger Universitätschor (The Leipzig University Choir) (= LUC) can today look back on more than 70 years of artistic tradition. During this time it has won an important position in the musical life of the city of Leipzig and well beyond. Its repertoire extends across all musical eras and styles, from folk songs to the great oratorios, though the works of J.S. Bach do play a pivotal role. It also includes unaccompanied concerts wit special attention to the vocal compositions of Heinrich Schütz, J.S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Max Reger, Hugo Distler, Arnold Schoenberg, Benjamin Britten and Francis Poulenc.
The Leipzig University Choir regularly undertakes radio and commercial recordings and appeared in a film made of J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245). Concert tours have taken the ensemble to Austria, France (Festival La Chaise Dieu), Romania, Poland, the former Soviet Union and Hungary. About 80 students from various faculties of Leipzig University belong to the choir today. |
