Geoffroy Buffière (Bass)

Born: 1977 - Sainte-Foy-les-Lyon, France

The French bass, Geoffroy Buffière, discovered singing at a young age in the Maîtrise de la Cathédrale de Lyon. He studied history and art history at the Ecole du Louvre, followed by professional vocal training in the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris and participated in master-classes with Christophe Rousset, Jérôme Corréas, Alain Buet, Margreet Hönig, Rachel Yakar... In 2008, he completed his graduate training in early music at the Conservatoire de Paris in the class of Howard Crook.

Geoffroy Buffière has practiced the Middle Ages and Renaissance repertoires with the Ensemble Clément Janequin (Director: D.Visse), A Sei Voci (Director: Fabre-Garrus), Ensemble William Byrd (Director: G. O'Reilly), Diabolus in Musica (Director: A. Guerber) and Huelgas Ensemble (Director: P. van Nevel), groups with whom he recorded several albums. He is also engaged regularly in Baroque repertoire that practice under the direction of conductors such as Gabriel Garrido, Christophe Coin, Jean Tubéry, Michel Laplénie, and with Les Arts Florissants (Director: William Christie), Le Concert d'Astrée (Director: Emmanuelle Haïm). Akadêmia Ensemble (Director: Françoise Lasserre) or Concert Spirituel (Director: Hervé Niquet) … In January 2009, he sang the bass solo part in Membra Jesu Nostri by Dietrich Buxtehude, at the Folle Journée de Nantes. He also performs more recent repertoire: as soloist (Le Paradis et la Péri by Robert Schumann) and with the Jeunes Solistes (Director: R. Safir), Sequenza 9.3 (Director: C. Simonpietri), Chœur de Chambre Accentus (Director: Laurence Equilbey) or Ensemble Intercontemporain (Director: S. Mälkki).

On the stage, Geoffroy Buffière participated in Noces de Pluton (parody of Proserpine by Lully), conducted by Hervé Niquet; as well as Dido and Aeneas (conducted by Kenneth Weiss). In 2008, he sang the roles of Fauteuil and Arbre in L'enfant et les sortilèges by Ravel, in a production conducted by François Le Roux. He also performed the roles of Jupiter and Grand Sacrificateur in Cadmus et Hermione by Lully (conducted by Vincent Dumestre, staged by Benjamin Lazar), at the Opéra Comique; and the role of Hymen in The Fairy Queen by Purcell (conducted by William Christie) at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence.

Geoffroy Buffière presented, in June 2009, at the Concours d'Entrée au CNIPAL and was on board for the 2009-2010 season. In October 2009, he was engaged by the Orchestre Régional de Cannes PACA for a concert of arias and opera duets in Cannes and Marseille. In late 2009 and early 2010, he participated in several concerts on tour in France and London with the Compagnie des Cyclopes, Les Arts Florissants, Ensemble Diabolus in Musica, Compagnie Madamelune, Association Echos d’Art, Chœur de Chambre Accentus or Poème Harmonique. In March 2010, he played the role of Louis in contemporary creation of Le Gâteau d’Anniversaire by Tim Benjamin, given the Foyer of the Opéra de Marseille.

The ensemble Baroques Graffiti invited Geoffroy Buffière to participate in the production of Zoroaster by Jean-Philippe Rameau at the Théâtre de Lenche in Marseille in May 2010. In June, he appeared in the lyric show M'aimez-vous bien, dedicated to W.A. Mozart and Rossini (staged by J-Louis Pichon) given by the CNIPAL at the 'Opéra de Marseille (Orchestre Philh. de Marseille, conducted by Claude Schnitzler) et au théâtre de Mérignac) and the Théâtre de Mérignac. In August 2010, he participated in the Edinburgh Festival and in December 2010 the production of Cadmus et Hermione by Lully at the Opéra Comique.
