German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach) |
English Translation |
1 |
Was mein Gott will, das g'scheh' allzeit,
Sein Will', der ist der beste;
Zu helfen den'n er ist bereit,
Die an ihn glauben feste;
Er hilft aus Not, der fromme Gott,
Und züchtiget mit Massen,
Wer Gott vertraut, fest auf ihn baut,
Den will er nicht verlaßen. |
What my God wants , may it always happen,
his will is what is best.
He is ready to help those
who believe firmly in him
He helps us in our poverty , the holy God,
and punishes us in moderation
Who places his trust in God and builds firmly on him,
he will not abandon. |
2 |
Gott ist mein Trost, mein' Zuversicht,
Mein' Hoffnung und mein Leben.
Was mein Gott will, daß mir geschicht,
Will ich nicht widerstreben.
Sein Wort ist wahr, denn all mein Haar
Er selber hat gezählet.
Er hüt't und wacht und hat wohl acht,
Auf daß uns gar nichts fehlet. |
God is my comfort, my confidence,
my hope and my life.
What my God wants to happen to me
I do not want to strive against.
His word is true, for all my hair
he himself has counted
He guards and watches and has taken good care
that we should lack nothing. |
3 |
Nun, muß ich Sünd'r von dieser Welt
Hinfahr'n in Gottes Willen
Zu meinem Gott: wann's ihm gefällt,
Will ich ihm halten stille.
Mein' arme Seel' ich Gott befehl'
In meiner letzten Stunden.
Du frommer Gott, Sünd, Höll' und Tod
Hast du mir überwunden. |
Now must I, a sinner from this world,
go hence in God’s will
to my God:when it pleases him,
I want to hold still with him.
I entrust my poor soul to God
in my last hours.
You holy God have overcome
for me sin, hell and death |
4 |
Noch eins, Herr, will ich bitten dich,
Du wirst mir's nicht versagen:
Wenn mich der böse Geist anficht,
Laß mich, Herr, nicht verzagen;
Hilf, steur und wehr, ach Gott, mein Herr,
Zu Ehren deinem Namen!
Wer das begehrt, dem wird's gewährt.
Drauf sprech' ich fröhlich: Amen. |
Just one thing, Lord, I want to ask you,:
you will not deny it to me:
when the evil spirit tempts me,
let me not despair.
Help, guide and protect, ah God, my Lord,
to the honour of your name.
Who desires this will have his wish granted;
for this reason I say joyfully: Amen |
