Aria (Duetto) [Soprano, Bass]

Tromba I/II, Timpani, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Wer mich liebet, der wird mein Wort halten,
und mein Vater wird ihn lieben,
und wir werden zu ihm kommen
und Wohnung bei ihm machen.

Who loves me will keep my word
and my Father will love him
and we shall come to him
and make our dwelling with him.

Recitative [Soprano]

Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

O, was sind das vor Ehren,
Worzu uns Jesus setzt?
Der uns so würdig schätzt,
Dass er verheißt,
Samt Vater und dem heilgen Geist
In unsern Herzen einzukehren.
O, was sind das vor Ehren?
Der Mensch ist Staub,
Der Eitelkeit ihr Raub,
Der Müh und Arbeit Trauerspiel
Und alles Elends Zweck und Ziel.
Wie nun? Der Allerhöchste spricht,
Er will in unsern Seelen
Die Wohnung sich erwählen.
Ach, was tut Gottes Liebe nicht?
Ach, dass doch, wie er wollte,
Ihn auch ein jeder lieben sollte.

O what are these honours
that Jesus sets as our goal?
He who values us so highly

that he has promised
with the Father and the Holy Spirit
to take up residence in our hearts.
O what honours are these?

Man is dust,
the prey of vanity,
a tragedy of effort and work
and the aim and goal of all misery.
What then? The Almighty speaks :
he wants in our hearts
to choose a dwellling for himself.
Ah, what does God's love not do ?
Ah if only as he wanted
each and every man should in turn love him.

Chorale [S, A, T, B]

Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott,
Erfüll mit deiner Gnaden Gut
Deiner Gläubigen Herz, Mut und Sinn.
Dein brünstig Lieb entzünd in ihn'n.
O Herr, durch deines Lichtes Glanz
Zu dem Glauben versammlet hast
Das Volk aus aller Welt Zungen;
Das sei dir, Herr, zu Lob gesungen.
Alleluja, alleluja.

Come, Holy Spirit, Lord God,
fill with the godness of your grace
the heart , will and mind of your believers.
Kindle your ardent love in them.
O Lord through the splendour of your light
you have gathered together in faith

people of every language from the world;
May this be sung in your praise, Lord.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Aria B

4

Aria [Bass]

Violino solo, Continuo

Die Welt mit allen Königreichen,
Die Welt mit aller Herrlichkeit
Kann dieser Herrlichkeit nicht gleichen,
Womit uns unser Gott erfreut:
Dass er in unsern Herzen thronet
Und wie in einem Himmel wohnet.
Ach Gott, wie selig sind wir doch,
Wie selig werden wir erst noch,
Wenn wir nach dieser Zeit der Erden
Bei dir im Himmel wohnen werden.

The world with all its kingdoms,
The world with all its glory
cannot be compared with this glory

with which our God makes us glad:
that his throne is within our hearts

and there he dwells as in heaven.
Ah God, how blessed we are now,
how blessed we shall then be
when after this time on earth
we shall live with you in heaven.
