Solti's & Schreier's recordings of the B-minor mass
Dougie Sospiro wrote (October 17, 2001):
I've been hearing mixed things about the Solti & Schreier recordings of the B-minor. Considering that I'm looking for a rendition which takes tempi somewhat similar to the overall quicker HIP trend [that is an overgeneralization, I know] but in modern pitch, these seems to be the answer at least for now... Still unable to track down either of the Schreiers. Opinions on any of these recordings would be more than welcome!
Bob Sherman wrote (October 17, 2001):
[To Dougie Sospiro] While I prefer modern pitch and instruments, I'm not fond of the Solti. Chorus too big and diffuse, soloists not distinguished. Richter is terrific, particularly the earlier one with Maria Stader, but his trumpets are too loud and brash. My overall favorite is Marriner, although most commentators seem to disagree with me on that.
William D. Kasimer wrote (October 17, 2001):
[To Dougie Sospiro] I've not heard either of these. I've disliked Solti in nearly everything I've ever heard other than Mahler, where he's merely tolerable; I've always shied away from Schreier's recordings because he uses soloists I generally find unattractive.
You might, though, wish to try the recent Rilling on Hänssler, which ought to meet your requirements.
Michael Grover wrote (October 17, 2001):
[To William D. Kasimer] This is way off-topic, but I have Solti's Zauberflöte with the Vienna Philharmonic (from the 90's; he actually recorded it twice in his career) and think it's wonderful.

I love Wencesclava Hruba-Frieburger singing BWV 199 with Schreier conducting. She's almost the best I've got, and I've got 10 versions of this.
