Jörg-Peter Weigle (Conductor)

Born: 1953 - Greifswald, Germany

The German conductor, Jörg-Peter Weigle, received his first musical training in an early age, when he was seven years old. From 1963 to 1971 he was member of the Leipzig Thomanerchor, during the last two years of this period also choir assistant. From 1973 to 1978 he studied at Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin with Dietrich Knothe (choir directing) and Professor Ruth Zechlin (counter-point).

Jörg-Peter Weigle completed his training by participation in Weimar music seminar in 1976 with Kurt Masur, as well as with the international master-classes in Vienna in 1978. From 1977 to 1980 he was a conductor at am Staatlichen Sinfonieorchester Neubrandenburg. From 1980 to 1988 he led the den Rundfunkchor Leipzig (since 1985 as a principal conductor).

With the 1986-1987 season, Jörg-Peter Weigle was appointed as the principal conductor of the Dresdner Philharmonie. Concert tours led him to Spain, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, South America, Austria, France, Italy and Japan. Besides he conducted on orchestras in his homeland and abroad - especially noted are: the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester, MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Bamberger Symphoniker, Staatskapelle Berlin and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra (Stockholm).

In September 1991 Jörg-Peter Weigle conducted at the Komischen Oper Berlin on the new production of Antigone by George Katzer under the direction of Harry Kupfer. In the following seasons the artist conducted on the new production of Hoffmanns Erzählungen, as well as the resumption of Carmen. To the Dresdner Semperoper Jörg-Peter Weigle 1993 led the musical new production of George Frideric Handel’s oratorio Belsazar in a production of Harry Kupfer.

With beginning of the season 1995-1996, Jörg-Peter Weigle began his position as principal conductor and an artistic leader the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker. The contract was extended for further five years until 2005. The critics have praised his fruitful, inspiring and successful work with the orchestra for years. Tours of the orchestra took place so far to North America in the autumn 1997 and South America in May 1998, as well as France in December 1998.

With Stuttgarter Philharmoniker Jörg-Peter Weigle performed the complete symphonic work of Hans Huber, to celebrate his 150-Birthday, finalised with the appearance of all 8 Symphonies. Further recordings under his conducting were produced on Philips (Arias & Ensembles from Mozart operas), Berlin Classics and Capriccio (Mozart variations as well as Max Reger’s Böcklin Suite).
