Mensch, stoße dich nicht dran!

Step forward on the way of faith,
God has laid the stone
that bears and supports Zion.
Man, do not stumble against it!

Der Heiland ist gesetzt
In Israel zum Fall und Auferstehen.
Der edle Stein ist sonder Schuld,
Wenn sich die böse Welt
So hart an ihm verletzt,
Ja, über ihn zur Höllen fällt,
Weil sie boshaftig an ihn rennet
Und Gottes Huld
Und Gnade nicht erkennet!
Doch selig ist
Ein auserwählter Christ,
Der seinen Glaubensgrund auf diesen Eckstein leget,
Weil er dadurch Heil und Erlösung findet.

 

The saviour is appointed
in Israel for its fall and resurrection
The precious stone is without blame
if the evil world
injures itself on it,
even falls over it to hell,
since the world runs against it so maliciously
and God's favour
and grace does not recognise!

But blessed is
a Christian who has been chosen,
who places the foundation of his faith on this cornerstone
since by this he finds salvation and redemption.

through faith on you may place
the foundation of my salvation
and so that I may not injure myself on you,

Dass Gottes Sohn
Verlässt den hohen Ehrenthron,
Dass er in Fleisch und Blut sich kleidet
Und in der Menschheit leidet.
Die größte Weisheit dieser Erden
Muß vor des Höchsten Rat
Zur größten Torheit werden.
Was Gott beschlossen hat,
Kann die Vernunft doch nicht ergründen;
Die blinde Leiterin verführt die geistlich Blinden.

 

Let the clever world be angry
that God's son
should forsake his high throne of honour,
that he should clothe himself in flesh and blood
and suffer as a human being.
The greatest wisdom of this world
must before the counsel of the most high
Become the greatest folly.
What God has decided,
reason cannnot fathom;
she is the blind leader who misleads the spiritually blind.
