Robert Murray (Tenor)

Born: Essex, England

The English tenor, Robert Murray, studied at the Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio. He won second prize in the Kathleen Ferrier awards 2003 and was a Jette Parker Young Artist at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

Operatic roles include Tamino in Die Zauberflote, Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Agenore in Il re Pastore, Belfiore in La Finta Giardiniera, Jacquino in Fidelio and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden); the title role in Albert Herring (Glyndebourne Touring Opera); Piquillo in La Périchole and Tom Rakewell The Rake’s Progress (Garsington Opera); Ferrando in Cosi fan Tutte (Opera North); Male Chorus in Rape of Lucretia (Den Norske Oper); The Simpleton in Boris Godunov, Tamino, Toni Reischmann in Henze’s Elegy For Young Lovers, Idamante in Idomeneo, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni and Steuermann in Der Fliegende Hollaender (English National Opera); Benvolio in Roméo et Juliette (Salzburg Festival); the title role in Jephtha (Welsh National Opera and the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston); Earl of Essex in Benjamin Britten’s Gloriana in his debut at the Staatsoper Hamburg and Bob Boles in Peter Grimes in Aldeburgh, as part of their B. Britten centenary celebrations.

Concert performances include Haydn’s Nelson Mass with Sir John Eliot Gardiner for the BBC Proms; George Frideric Handel’s Solomon with the Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Hamburg; W.A. Mozart’s C Minor Mass (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra/Sir Charles Mackerras and Le Concert d'Astrée/Emmanuelle Haïm); Evangelist in J.S. Bach’s St John Passion (BWV 245) (London Handel Festival); Damon in G.F. Handel’s Acis and Galatea, Berlioz’s Grande Messe des Morts, G.F. Handel’s Saul, Haydn’s Creation (Gstaad Festival) and Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah (BBC Proms) with the Gabrieli Consort & Players; and W.A. Mozart's Requiem at London’s Barbican Mostly Mozart Festival with Harry Christophers and The Sixteen. At the Aldeburgh Festival, he has performed B. Britten’s War Requiem with Simone Young, and B. Britten’s Our Hunting Fathers (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra/Thomas Adès). At the Edinburgh Festival he has performed in Strauss’ Elektra (Royal Scottish National Orchestra/Edward Gardner), Robert Schumann’s Manfred with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Ilan Volkov, Haydn’s Die sieben letzten Worte des Erlösers am Kreuze (Scottish Chamber Orchestra), Delius’ Mass of Life with Sir Andrew Davis and Purcell’s King Arthur (The Sixteen/Harry Christophers). Other concert work includes Tristan und Isolde under Valery Gergiev and J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) under Yannick Nézet-Séguin, both with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra; semi-staged performances of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck in London and Paris (Philharmonia Orchestra/Esa-Pekka Salonen), B. Britten’s Serenade (Orchestre National de Lyon/Paul McCreesh) and Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra/Edward Gardner).

In recital he has performed at the Newbury, Two Moors, Brighton and Aldeburgh Festivals and at London’s Wigmore Hall. He has toured Die schöne Müllerin extensively with Malcolm Martineau, and recorded a recital of Johannes Brahms, Francis Poulenc and Samuel Barber with Simon Lepper for Voices on BBC Radio 3, and performed On Wenlock Edge with the Dante Quartet both at the 2006 Brighton Festival and at London’s Wigmore Hall. Most recently he has appeared on Malcolm Martineau’s Complete F. Poulenc Songs series for Signum, excerpts from B. Britten’s Gloriana with Edward Gardner for Chandos and Berlioz’s Grande Messe des Morts with the Gabrieli Consort & Players.

Future engagements include Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.2 (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra/Edward Gardner); Carmina Burana (Orchestre National de Lyon); J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in a tour of the Netherlands with the Nederlandse Bachvereniging and appearances at Garsington and Scottish Opera.
