Charles Daniels (Tenor)

Born: Salisbury, England

The English tenor, Charles Daniels, was both a Chorister and a Choral Scholar of King's College, Cambridge, spending the intervening years at Winchester College. After reading Natural Sciences and Music at Cambridge, he won a Foundation Scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London where he studied under Edward Brooks. He was a major prize-winner in both the Great Grimsby International Competition for singers and in the final of the 1986 GKN English Song Award, winning the Hubert Parry Prize for the best programme in that competition.

Charles Daniels' career has taken him to Israel, Australia, New Zealand and Canada and all over Europe. Performances have included George Frideric Handel's The Triumph of Time and Truth in Utrecht and Amsterdam, Judas Maccabaeus in San Sebastian, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah in Fribourg and Puccini's Missa di Gloria in Lisbon, both conducted by Michel Corboz, J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) in St Gallen and Amriswil and Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) with the RTE Symphony Orchestra and with the Stavanger Symfoniorkester. A regular performer with De Nederlandse Bachvereniging (Director: Jos van Veldhoven), Charles last appeared with them in performances of Monteverdi's Vespers in the Netherlands in December 2000. With Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists, Charles took part in a performance of J.S. Bach's Cantatas in Arnstadt, as part of the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage 2000.

In the UK, Charles Daniels has performed J.S. Bach's Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Schubert's Mass in Eb with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Alfredo Casella's La giara with George Benjamin and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Purcell's Dioclesian with the Academy of Ancient Music and Christopher Hogwood at the Barbican, London, and an all-Handel programme with James O’Donnell and the Academy of Ancient Music at Westminster Abbey for BBC Millenium Live 2000.

Festival performances include regular appearances at the BBC Promenade Concerts, Rameau's La Guirlaunde at the Flanders Festival in Bruges, Purcell’s Fairy Queen with Les Arts Florissants in Aix-en Provence, G.F. Handel's Solomon in the Halle Händel-Festspiele and the role of Acis in Acis and Galatea in Montepellier. Charles also toured with Les Arts Florissants in Lully's Atys at the Opéra Comique, Paris, Montpellier, Caen, Madrid and New York.

Recordings include the role of Peachum in The Beggar's Opera, J.S. Bach’s Easter Oratorio (BWV 248) with Andrew Parrott, Purcell's Fairy Queen with Les Arts Florissants, Haydn’s St Cecilia Mass, Charpentier's Vêpres aux Jesuites with the Gulbenkian Choir & Orchestra under Michel Corboz and a number of Purcell recordings for Hyperion with the King's Consort.

Among the singers who have studied with him and/or attended his master-classes: Wessel van der Ham (Bass-Baritone).
