David Clegg (Counter-tenor) |
Born: England |
The English counter-tenor, David Clegg, was choral scholar at New College, Oxford reading music, followed by the opera course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Eamonn Dougan stalked him at both establishments.
Since leaving Oxford David Clegg has sung with many of England's most celebrated early music ensembles, and also done several operas over the years, both here in the UK and further afield. He teaches individual singing lessons at Winchester and Westminster, which keeps him usy during term times. On top of this he is involved in fixing an increasing amount of musicians for various ensembles, such as the Gabrieli Consort, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Le Concert d'Astrée, Early Opera Company and many one off projects including some pop sessions with bands such as Goldfrapp and Portishead. Conductors who he has provided musicians for include the late Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Mark Elder, Gustav Leonhardt and Trevor Pinnock.
David Clegg made his debut with The Sixteen in a two-concert trip to Derry in 1999, notable for a lock-in in a bar with a sing-song around the piano in the wee small hours led by Libby Crabtree. He has sung with The Sixteen in many memorable gigs over the years. The Proms always stand out - doing Tallis' "Spem in Alium" to a packed late night audience a few years ago was very special. The first concert they did in Mexico, slightly breathless at altitude, sticks in his mind, as do some of the Choral Pilgrimage dates over the years. Coming from Hampshire, the WInchester concert each year is always memorable - during a bar of rest its nice to look up and spot many friends and family in the audience. |
