American Bach Soloists (Baroque Vocal & Instrumental Ensemble)

Founded: 1989 - California, USA

The American Bach Soloists (= ABS), founded in 1989 by artistic and music director Jeffrey Thomas and organist Jonathan Dimmock, have been hailed by the San Francisco Examiner as "period style all-stars" who are "setting a new international standard" by presenting and recording historically informed, virtuoso performances of music of the Baroque and Classical periods, often focusing on the cantatas, motets, and concertos of J.S. Bach.

Bringing together the leading vocal and instrumental interpreters of Baroque music in the USA, ABS members comprise a veritable "Who's Who" among early music specialists, most with significant recording careers already established in the US and Europe. Along with their adjunct ensemble, the American Classical Soloists, ABS presents a concert series December through May, with performances in Marin, San Francisco and the East Bay, and an annual SummerFest, six days of concerts, lectures, recitals, and related events in Marin County each July. American Bach Soloists are Artists-in-Residence at St. Stephen's Church, Belvedere California.

ABS appears at music festivals in both the USA and Europe, having performed on tour in Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, and in Los Angeles, Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania), Atlanta, and at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. In 1991, the ensemble received National Public Radio's prestigious Lucien Wulsin Award for Best Performance.

The ensemble records extensively for Koch International Classics. Works currently in their discography include six volumes of cantatas and the Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) by J.S. Bach, J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) and Transcriptions of Italian Music (including the Concerto for four harpsichords and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater), Heinrich Schütz' Musicalische Exequien, and Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass. Future releases include J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos (BWV 1046-1051), L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, and the Concerti Grossi Op. 6 of Arcangelo Corelli.
