The American counter-tenor,m conductor and music poedagogue, Dana March, received his early training as a boy chorister at St. Thomas Choir School in New York and at Salisbury Cathedral in England. He obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in organ from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York; his Master of Studies degree in Historical Musicology from University of Oxford, England; and his D.Phil. degree in Historical Musicology from University of Oxford, England.
Dana Marsh has developed a broad-ranging career in the field of Historical Performance as an ensemble director, counter-tenor, organist and academic. He has taught early-music history at both Oxford and Cambridge universities and has published articles through the scholarly presses of both institutions. He was assistant director of music at Girton College Cambridge and has been canon director of music at Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis, since 2010.
Guest-conducting appearances have brought Dana Marsh into fruitful collaboration with numerous vocal and instrumental ensembles, including the London Mozart Players, Magnificat (UK), Cappella Romana, Ensemble Charivari Agréable, Band of Instruments, Choir of St. Thomas Fifth Avenue, Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra and the IU-EMI Baroque Orchestra. He founded the British early-music group, Musica Humana Oxford (2001-2008), which performed frequently in the UK and toured to the USA to high critical praise (“… pleasing to the ear and satisfying to the soul.” - LA Times). He also served as a Fellow and Director of Chapel Music at Girton College Cambridge. He has prepared ensembles of young singers for recording and concert projects under Esa-Pekka Salonen and Antonio Pappano with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
Dana Marsh has extensive experience as a consort singer and vocal soloist in the USA and the UK (1992-2008). He has performed with the American Bach Soloists (Director: Jeffrey Thomas), Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, Concert Royal, New York Collegium (under the late Gustav Leonhardt), Seattle Baroque Orchestra, with the lutenist James Tyler, Choir of New College, Oxford and Academy of Ancient Music.
While completing his doctoral research, Dana Marsh sang regularly with the Choir of New College, Oxford under Edward Higginbottom and with that ensemble, participated in numerous collaborations with the Academy of Ancient Music, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and European Union Baroque Orchestra; additionally, recording 15 CD's, one of which won the Gramophone Award for Early Music in 2008.
A regular with the Choir of New College, Oxford while undertaking his doctoral research at Oxford, he recorded 15 CD's with that ensemble, one of which won the Gramophone Early Music award in 2008. He has recorded variously for Decca, Avie, Sony, Universal, Koch International Classics, Erato, Signum and Public Radio International.. |
