The Canadian counter-tenor, Daniel Taylor, completed his undergraduate studies in English, philosophy and music at McGill University (Montreal) and his graduate work in religion and music at the University of Montreal, furthering his studies with the leaders of Britain's Baroque specialist groups. He continues now with Jan Simons and Michael Chance.
Daniel Taylor's Glyndebourne debut in the 1997 Peter Sellar's production of George Frideric Handel's Theodora was greeted with critical praise (recorded for Erato), and followed on an equally successful operatic debut in the Jonathan Miller production of G.F. Handel's Rodelinda (recorded for EMI). He took the title role in Gluck’s Orfeo at the Edinburgh Festival. His other operatic roles have included Nerone in Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Eustazio and Gottfredo in G.F. Handel's Rinaldo, Athamas in G.F. Handel’s Semele, and Tolomeo in G.F. Handel's Giulio Cesare. His North American operatic debut was in G.F. Handel’s Cesare at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Daniel receives invitations from an ever-widening circle of the world’s leading early and contemporary music ensembles, appearing in opera (Metropolitan Opera, Glyndebourne, San Francisco, Rome, Welsh National Opera, Canadian Opera, Opera North, Montreal Opera and Munich); oratorio (the American Bach Soloists, Collegium Vocale Gent, Gabrieli Consort, Monteverdi Choir/English Baroque Soloists, Bach Collegium Japan, Les Arts Florissants, Les Violons du Roy, Les Voix Humaines, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The King’s Consort); symphonic works (Cleveland Orchestra, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Lisbon, Philadelphia Orchestra, Tonhalle Zürich, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Montreal); recital (Vienna Konzerthaus, Frick Collection, New York, Forbidden Concert Hall, Beijing, Lufthansa Baroque Festival and Wigmore Hall, London) and film (Podeswa’s Five Senses for Fineline - winner at Cannes and also of a Genie).
Daniel Taylor is recognized as "Canada’s star countertenor" and "Canada’s most prolific recording artist". In addition to opera, his repertooire includes a wide range of sacred works, lute songs, and contemporary works such as Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms and Sakamoto's Life. Highlights of past engagements include G.F. Handel’s Messiah with San Francisco Symphony Orchestra/Harry Christophers; G.F. Handel’s Rinaldo with the Academy of Ancient Music/Christopher Hogwood (with Cecilia Bartoli for Decca); G.F. Handel’s Israel in Egypt with the Cleveland Orchestra/Nicholas McGegan; Messiah with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra/Harry Christophers; Orff's Carmina Burana with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra/Oundjan; J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) with the National Arts Centre Orchestra/Trevor Pinnock; G.F. Handel’s Rinaldo at the Munich Opera/Harry Bicket; Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with the Philadelphia Orchestra/Dutoit; G.F. He appeared on German Television for the Prime Minister of Germany, on Spanish Television for the Queen of Spain and in a recital for the King and Queen of Sweden. With the Gabrieli Consort/Paul McCreesh, Daniel toured Europe in Purcell’s Odes, appeared in recital on Polish Television and toured Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas; he also appeared in J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) with the Tonhalle Zürich Orchestra/Paul McCreesh. With the Madrid National Orchestra/Paul Goodwin, he sang in the J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) on Spanish Television. With the Monteverdi Choir/John Eliot Gardiner, Daniel appeared in G.F. Handel’s Israel in Egypt on British Television at the BBC Proms; returning to the BBC Proms in recital with the Berlin Akamus.
In the 2009-2010 Season, Daniel Taylor made his debuts with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Madrid National Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He returned to the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, to Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society, to the Nashville Symphony, San Diego Symphony and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, to the Calgary Philharmonic, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Quebec Symphony. He toured Europe with the Academy of Ancient Music, appeared in recital at the Wigmore Hall and in concerts with the Gabrieli Consort and with the Bach Academy of Stuttgart. He also made his solo recital debuts in Barcelona at the Palau de la Musica, and in March 2010 at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
Daniel Taylor is Professor of Voice at the Conservatoire de musique in Montreal, Professor of Voice at the University of Ottawa, an Adjunct Professor at McGill University, a Visiting Scholar at the University of Victoria and Artist-in-Residence at Banff Centre for the PeArts. Daniel is Artistic Director and Conductor of the Choir and Orchestra of the Theatre of Early Music. The Theatre of Early Music performs more than 30 concerts every year in concert halls all over the world.

Daniel appears on more than 80 recordings which include Bach Cantatas/Monteverdi Choir/John Eliot Gardiner (for Deutsche Grammophone Archiv and SDG); Renaissance duets with James Bowman/Actor Ralph Fiennes/Theatre of Early Music (BIS); G.F. He has frequently performed and recorded with Canadian soprano Suzie LeBlanc. His solo recordings also include of songs by Dowland, Byrd and Purcell and a recording of J.S. Bach arias. He has also recorded soundtracks for La Corriveau, the Orphans of Duplessis and Cyrano de Bergerac.
Daniel Taylor was named Opus Prizes Discovery of the year 1999 and Artist of the Year 2004.
