The American tenor, Aaron Sheehan, obtained his BA from Luther College and his MM (Early Voice Performance) from Indiana University. In 2001, he was named a finalist in the Chimay International Baroque Singing Competition under the auspices of William Christie.
Aaron Sheehan is a member of the new generation of American early music vocalists. He is in high demand as a versatile performer of music ranging from solo to chamber repertoire. His voice has been described by Opera News as “sinuous and supple” and the Boston Globe says he “sings with vocal aplomb and musical charm.” His voice has also been praised by the New York Times, and the Washington Post.
Aaron Sheehan has appeared as soloist with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Tragicomedia, Concerto Palatino, New York Collegium, The King’s Noyse, American Bach Soloists, Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Early Music Festival, Tempesta di Mare (Directors: Gwyn Roberts & Richard Stone), Aston Magna Festival, Charlotte Symphony, North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Dryden Ensemble, Boston Cecilia, American Opera Theater, Intermezzo Chamber Opera Company, and the Lyra Concert Baroque Orchestra. has appeared with other ensembles including Blue Heron Renaissance Choir, Fortune’s Wheel, La Donna Musicale, and Liber unUsualis.
His singing has taken him to many venues and festivals such as Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Washington National Cathedral, Tanglewood, the Early Music Festivals of Boston, Regensburg, San Francisco, Houston, Tucson, Washington DC, and Madison, as well as Monadnock Summer Music Festival. Aaron has recorded and toured the USA and Europe with Paul Hillier’s Theater of Voices, as well as Fortune’s Wheel, and appears on the 2007 Grammy nominated recording of Lully’s Theseé, and the recently released Lully’s Psyche, with the Boston Early Music Festival.
Recent engagements include the role of Ivan in the Boston Early Music Festival’s world premiere staging of Mattheson’s Boris Goudenow, a national tour of the Monteverdi Vespers with Tragicomedia and Concerto Palatino, and a lecture/recital with musicologist Tom Kelly at the Metroplitan Museum of Art in New York. Upcoming engagements include a concert and recording of Monteverdi’s Orfeo with the Aston Magna Music Festival.
Aaron Sheehan is a Faculty member teacing voice at Wellesley College, Case Western Reserve University, and Brown University. He has given master-classes at these institutes and at Yale University, as well as being on the faculty of the Madison Early Music Festival at the University of Wisconsin. |
