1

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Tromba I-III, Timpani, Oboe I-III, Fagotto, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg
Songs are sung with joy of victory
in den Hütten der Gerechten:
in the tents of the virtuous:
Die Rechte des Herrn behält den Sieg,
the right hand of the Lord wins the victory,
die Rechte des Herrn ist erhöhet,
the right hand of the Lord is exalted,
die Rechte des Herrn behält den Sieg!
the right hand of the Lord wins the victory!

2

Aria [Bass]

Violone, Continuo

Kraft und Stärke sei gesungen
Strength and might be sung
Gott, dem Lamme,das bezwungen
to God, to the Lamb, who conquered
Und den Satanas verjagt,
and drove away Satan
Der uns Tag und Nacht verklagt.
who accused us day and night.
Ehr und Sieg ist auf die Frommen
Honour and victory has come upon those who are devout
Durch des Lammes Blut gekommen.
through the Lamb's blood.

3

Recitative [Alto]

Continuo

Ich fürchte mich
I am not afraid
Vor tausend Feinden nicht,
of a thousand enemies,
Denn Gottes Engel lagern sich
since God's angels are encamped
Um meine Seiten her;
around me;
Wenn alles fällt, wenn alles bricht,
though everything falls, though everything breaks,
So bin ich doch in Ruhe.
yet I am still at peace.
Wie wär es möglich zu verzagen?
How would it be possible to despair?
Gott schickt mir ferner Roß und Wagen
God will send me horses and chariots
Und ganze Herden Engel zu.
and whole hosts of angels.

4

Aria [Soprano]

Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Gottes Engel weichen nie,
God's angels never retreat,
Sie sind bei mir allerenden.
they are with me everywhere.
Wenn ich schlafe, wachen sie,
When I sleep, they watch over me,
Wenn ich gehe,
when I go,
Wenn ich stehe,
when I stand still
Tragen sie mich auf den Händen.
they bear me in their hands.

5

Recitative [Tenor]

Continuo

Ich danke dir,
I thank you,
Mein lieber Gott, dafür;
my dear God, for this;
Dabei verleihe mir,
grant to me as well
Daß ich mein sündlich Tun bereue,
that I may repent my sinful actions,
Daß sich mein Engel drüber freue,
so that my angel may have cause for rejoicing,
Damit er mich an meinem Sterbetage
and then on my deathbed carry me
In deinen Schoß zum Himmel trage.
to your bosom in heaven.

6

Aria (Duetto) [Alto, Tenor]

Fagotto, Continuo

Seid wachsam, ihr heiligen Wächter,
Be watchful, you holy watchmen,
Die Nacht ist schier dahin.
the night is almost past.
Ich sehne mich und ruhe nicht,
I am filled with longing and shall not rest
Bis ich vor dem Angesicht
until I am before the face
Meines lieben Vaters bin.
of my dear father.

7

Chorale [S, A, T, B]

Tromba I-III, Timpani, Continuo, Violino I e Oboe I col Soprano, Violino II e Oboe II/III coll'Alto, Viola col Tenore, Fagotto col Basso

Ach Herr, laß dein lieb Engelein
Ah Lord, let your dear angels
Am letzten End die Seele mein
at my last end carry my soul
In Abrahams Schoß tragen,
to Abraham's bosom,
Den Leib in seim Schlafkämmerlein
while my body in its narrow chamber of sleep
Gar sanft ohn einge Qual und Pein
gently without pain and torment
Ruhn bis am jüngsten Tage!
rests until the last day!
Alsdenn vom Tod erwecke mich,
Then awaken me from death,
Daß meine Augen sehen dich
so that my eyes may see you
In aller Freud, o Gottes Sohn,
in all joy, o God's son,
Mein Heiland und Genadenthron!
my saviour and throne of mercy!
Herr Jesu Christ, erhöre mich, erhöre mich,
Lord Jesus Christ, hear me, hear me,
Ich will dich preisen ewiglich!
I want to praise you for ever!

Note on the text

The text is by Picander and is based on the Epistle reading for the feast of St. Michael and All Angels (Revelations 12: 7-12: the battle between Michael and the dragon). The opening movement uses a verse from the Psalms (118, 15). The third movement refers to Psalm 34, 7 ('The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them'). Movement 6 refers to Isaiah 21, 11-12. There are many resemblances to the text of BWV 19 which may also be by Picander. The concluding chorale is the third strophe of Martin Schalling's hymn Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr (1571) set to its anonymous associated melody (1577).
