|
Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben!
Du schlägest sie, aber sie fühlens nicht;
du plagest sie, aber sie bessern sich nicht.
Sie haben ein härter Angesicht denn ein Fels
und wollen sich nicht bekehren. |
Lord, your eyes seek out faith!
You smite them, but they feel nothing;
you plague them, but they won’t right themselves.
They have hardened their countenance like stone
and will not be converted. |

2. REZITATIV (Baß) |
|
Wo ist das Ebenbild, das Gott uns eingepräget,
wenn der verkehrte Will sich ihm zuwider leget?
Wo ist die Kraft von seinem Wort,
wenn alle Besserung weicht aus dem Herzen fort?
Der Höchste suchet uns durch Sanftmut zwar zu zähmen,
ob der verirrte Geist sich wollte noch bequemen;
doch, fährt er fort in dem verstockten Sinn,
so gibt er ihn ins Herzens Dünkel hin. |
What happens to the likeness that God imprints
upon us if the consorted will rebuts it?
What happens to the power of his word
if all betterment abates the heart?
The Most High actually seeks gently to tame us,
although the straying soul would rather be forced;
yet if it proceeds forward with an obstinate mind
then God will abandon it to the heart’s darkness. |

|
Weh der Seele, die den Schaden
nicht mehr kennt
und, die Straf auf sich zu laden,
störrig rennt,
ja von ihres Gottes Gnaden
selbst sich trennt. |
Woe be the soul who no longer
recognizes its harms
or the punishment it piles upon itself,
stubbornly running,
effectively severing itself,
from the mercy of its God. |

|
Verachtest du den Reichtum seiner Gnade,
Geduld und Langmütigkeit?
Weißest du nicht,
daß dich Gottes Güte zur Buße locket?
Du aber nach deinem verstockten
und unbußfertigen Herzen häufest dir selbst den Zorn
auf den Tag des Zorns
und der Offenbarung des gerechten Gerichts Gottes. |
Do you disregard the wealth of his grace,
patience and forbearance?
Do you not recognize that God’s kindness
beckons you to repentance?
But you with your stubborn, impenitent heart
heap wrath upon yourself
for that day of wrath
when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

Erschrecke doch,
du allzu sichre Seele!
Denk, was dich würdig zähle
der Sünden Joch.
Die Gottes Langmut geht auf einem Fuß von Blei,
damit der Zorn hernach dir desto schwerer sei. |
Do be afraid
you all too certain soul!
Consider what rightly is added
to the yoke of your sins.
God’s forbearance treads with a leaden foot
whereby the subsequent wrath will be even heavier. |

|
Beim Warten ist Gefahr;
willt du die Zeit verlieren?
Der Gott, der ehmals gnädig war,
kann leichtlich dich vor seinen Richtstuhl führen.
Wo bleibt sodann die Buß?
Es ist ein Augenblick, der Zeit und Ewigkeit,
der Leib und Seele scheidet;
verblendter Sinn, ach kehre doch zurück,
daß dich dieselbe Stund nicht finde unbereitet! |
In waiting there is danger;
will you forfeit this moment?
God, who previously was merciful,
can easily direct you to his seat of judgment.
Why wait with your repentance?
It takes only a blink of the eye for time and eternity,
to sever body from soul;
blinded mind oh do turn around
that this very hour not find you ill prepared! |

7. CHORAL |
|
Heut lebst du, heut bekehre dich!
eh morgen kommt, kanns ändern sich;
wer heut ist frisch, gesund und rot,
ist morgen krank, ja wohl gar tot.
So du nun stirbest ohne Buß,
dein Leib und Seel dort brennen muß.
Hilf, o Herr Jesu, hilf du mir,
daß ich noch heute komm zu dir
und Buße tu den Augenblick,
eh mich der schnelle Tod hinrück,
auf daß ich heut und jederzeit
zu meiner Heimfahrt sei bereit. |
Today you live, today convert yourself,
before morning dawns things could change;
someone young, healthy and flush today
tomorrow is ill or even quite dead.
So if you die now without repentance
your body and soul must burn there (in hell).
Help, O Lord Jesus, help me,
that yet today I come to you
and do penance in this moment,
before sudden death bears down on me,
so that today and at all times
I am prepared for my journey home. |
