Tobias Wicky (Baritone)

Born: Ruswil, Canton Lucerne, Switzerland

The Swiss baritone, Tobias Wicky, received his earliest musical training in the Basel Boys Choir, before going on to study with Marcel Boone at the Basel Academy of Music. Alongside his studies with Boone he also developed his knowledge of historical performance practice with Rosa Domínguez at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

Tobias Wicky leads an intensely active concert life at home and abroad. His particular interests lie in the fields of Lieder and oratorio. His repertoire includes works ranging from the Early Baroque to the modern period, with a focus on Early Music. In 2016 he established a solid partnership with the pianist Maki Wiederkehr to perform Lieder recitals, and they have regularly given concerts together. Their repertoire includes both Lieder by Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann and mélodies by Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, Henri Duparc and Francis Poulenc.

Tobias Wicky also places importance on cultivating ensemble singing, with which he has been involved since childhood. Besides his solo work as a Lieder and concert singer, the young baritone is a member of several professional vocal ensembles such as the Ensemble Orlando Fribourg, Collegium Vocale Gent (Director: Philippe Herreweghe) and the Chor der J.S. Bach-Stiftung St. Gallen (Director: Rudolf Lutz), with whom he regularly appears as soloist.

In 2012, Tobias Wicky founded the professional ensemble Voces Suaves, who have given important concerts at leading festivals throughout Europe (Ambronay Festival, Festival de Saintes, Forum alte Musik Zurich, Monteverdi Festival Cremona, Seviqc Brežice Festival Slovenia, MA Festival Bruges, Music Festival Potsdam Sanssouci, Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, Berlin State Opera, Misteria Paschalia Krakow etc.) His various CD recordings have received several international prizes (including the Diapason découverte award).
