Alex Potter (Counter-tenor) |
Born: England |
The English counter-tenor, Alex Potter, began his musical career as a chorister at Southwark Cathedral. Later he was a Choral Scholar and read music at New College, Oxford. He then went on to pursue further studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Gerd Türk.
Since finishing his studies, Alex Potter has specialised in 17th and 18th-century music, working with conductors, such as Philippe Herreweghe, Thomas Hengelbrock, Daniel Reuss, Peter Neumann and Philippe Pierlot. Solo-engagements have taken him to festivals such as the Festival internazionale di Musica e Arte sacra in Rome, the Feldkirch Festival in Austria, and the Prague Spring Festival.
Recent highlights include J.S. Bach's Johannes Passion (BWV 245) at the Philharmonie in Essen with Peter Neumann, the same work with Ad Fontes Baroque Orchestra directed by Peter Schreier in Solothurn (April 2006), staged performances of George Frideric Handel’s Susannah at the Stadttheater in Koblenz, Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Missa Votiva with Kammerchor Stuttgart/Frieder Bernius, and the role of Second Witch and Spirit in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with Philippe Pierlot/Collegium Vocale Gent at Folle Journée festival in Nantes, which was broadcast live by Arte television.
His discography includes the role of Azaria in J.D. Zelenka’s oratorio Il serpente di Bronzo with Ensemble Inegal in Prague and number of recordings as a member of the choir Collegium Vocale Gent/Philippe Herreweghe, with whom he appears as a soloist in Heinrich Schütz’s Schwanengesang.
Future plans include Purcell Verse Anthems with Philippe Herreweghe in Tuscany, G.F. Handel’s Saul in the Rheingau Festival with Peter Neumann, J.S. Bach's Cantatas with the Ricercar Consort/Philippe Pierlot and Duet Recitals in Canada together with counter-tenor Matthew White. |
