Der rollenden Pauken durchdringender Knall!
piercing crash of rolling kettledrums!
Locket den lüsteren Hörer herbei,
Tempt the eager students to come this way,
Saget mit euren frohlockenden Tönen
tell with your notes of rejoicing
Und doppelt vermehretem Schall
and with your sound that is doubled and made greater
Denen mir emsig ergebenen Söhnen,
to my devoted and busy sons

Diligence:
Wen treibt ein edler Trieb zu dem, was Ehre heißt
The man who is driven by a noble impulse to what is called honour
Und wessen lobbegierger Geist
and whose soul is eager for praise
Sehnt sich, mit dem zu prangen,
and longs to be resplendent
Was man durch Kunst, Verstand und Tugend kann erlangen,
with what can be achieved through art, intelligence and virtue,
Der trete meine Bahn
that man should walk on my road
Beherzt mit stets verneuten Kräften an!
bravely with strength that is always renewed!
Was jetzt die junge Hand, der muntre Fuß erwirbt,
What the youthful hand, the lively foot acquires now
Macht, daß das alte Haupt in keiner Schmach und banger Not verdirbt.
is the reason why the old head will not be ruined by any disgrace or fearful misery.
Der Jugend angewandte Säfte
A character that is devoted [to hard work] in youth
Erhalten denn des Alters matte Kräfte,
will one day support the feeble strength of old age.
Und die in ihrer besten Zeit,
and those who in the best time of their lives -
Wie es den Faulen scheint,
so it seems to the lazy-
In nichts als lauter Müh und steter Arbeit schweben,
are caught up in nothing but sheer effort and constant work,
Die können nach erlangtem Ziel, an Ehren satt,
once their aims are achieved they can, full of honour,
In stolzer Ruhe leben;
live in proud rest ;
Denn sie erfahren in der Tat,
for they learn through their experience
Daß der die Ruhe recht genießet,

Ihr Schläfrigen, herbei!

Erblickt ameinem mir beliebten Kortten,
Look on Kortte , a man beloved by me.
Wie daß in meinen Worten
See that in my words
Kein eitler Wahn verborgen sei.
no vain delusion lies hidden.
Sein annoch zarter Fuß fing kaum zu gehen an,
Scarcely had his still tender foot began to walk
Sogleich betrat er meine Bahn,
when he trod on my way
Und, da er nun so zeitig angefangen,

So kann er sich an meinen Schätzen,

Da er durch eure Gunst sich mir in Schoß gebracht,
since through your favour he came into my embrace,
Wenn er in stolzer Ruhe lacht,
when he laughs in proud rest,
Nach eigner Lust ergötzen.

What I hoped for has been fulfilled,

for such unexpected good fortune,
Mein nie genung gepriesner Kortte,

Der Freunde Wünschen stillt.
