|
Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein
und laß dichs doch erbarmen!
Wie wenig sind der Heilgen dein,
verlassen sind wir Armen.
Dein Wort man nicht läßt haben wahr,
der Glaub ist auch verloschen gar
bei allen Menschenkindern. |
Oh God, look down from heaven
and do allow yourself mercy!
How few are your saints,
abandoned are we the poor.
Your word is not considered true,
the faith also is fully obliterated
among all humanity’s children. |

|
Sie lehren eitel falsche List,
was wider Gott und seine Wahrheit ist;
und was der eigen Witz erdenket
- O Jammer! der die Kirche schmerzlich kränket -,
das muß anstatt der Bibel stehn.
Der eine wählet dies, der andre das,
die törichte Vernunft ist ihr Kompaß;
sie gleichen denen Totengräbern,
die, ob sie zwar von außen schön,
nur Stank und Moder in sich fassen
und lauter Unflat sehen lassen. |
They teach vain, fallacious deceit
which is counter to God and his truth;
and this their own wit contrives,
- O misery! which painfully taints the church -
this does persist despite the Bible.
One person believes one thing, another something else, idle reason is their compass;
they are just like burial plots
which, though they actually seem pleasant
from the outside, only conceal stink and decay
and divulge rampant filth. |

|
Tilg, o Gott, die Lehren,
so dein Wort verkehren!
Wehre doch der Ketzerei
und allen Rottengeistern;
denn sie sprechen ohne Scheu:
trotz dem, der uns will meistern! |
Wipe out, O God, the doctrines
so perverting your word!
Defend against heresy
and all rank souls;
for they speak unabashedly:
defying him who has dominion over us! |

|
Die Armen sind verstört,
ihr seufzend Ach! ihr ängstlich Klagen
bei soviel Kreuz und Not,
wodurch die Feinde fromme Seelen plagen,
dringt in das Gnadenohr des Allerhöchsten ein.
Darum spricht Gott: Ich muß ihr Helfer sein!
Ich hab ihr Flehn erhört,
der Hilfe Morgenrot,
der reinen Wahrheit heller Sonnenschein
soll sie mit neuer Kraft,
die Trost und Leben schafft,
erquicken und erfreun.
Ich will mich ihrer Not erbarmen,
mein heilsam Wort soll sein die Kraft der Armen. |
The poor are distraught
their sighing woes, their anxious lament
midst so much burden and agony,
by which the foes plague pious souls,
permeate to the merciful ear of the Most High.
Thus God responds: I must be their aide!
I have heard their supplication,
the dawning of help,
the pure truth of bright sunshine
shall restore them with renewed strength,
fostering solace and life,
refreshment and delight.
I will have mercy in their distress,
my healing word shall be the strength of the poor. |

|
Durchs Feuer wird das Silber rein,
durchs Kreuz das Wort bewährt erfunden.
Drum soll ein Christ zu allen Stunden
im Kreuz und Not geduldig sein. |
By fire silver is refined,
by the cross the word is rendered proven.
Therefore a Christian should at every hour
persevere through cross and distress. |

Das wollst du, Gott, bewahren rein
für diesem arg'n Geschlechte;
und laß uns dir befohlen sein,
daß sichs in uns nicht flechte.
Der gottlos Hauf sich umher findt,
wo solche lose Leute sind
in deinem Volk erhaben. |
Would that you, God, safeguard pure
before this spiteful generation;
and let us follow your commands
that nothing might tarnish us.
The godless horde are to be found everywhere
where such wanton people
are esteemed among your people. |
