Höchsterwünschtes Freudenfest,
das der Herr zu seinem Ruhme
im erbauten Heiligtume
uns vergnügt begehen läßt.
Höchsterwünschtes Freudenfest! |
Most highly desired feast of joy,
which the Lord to his glory
in this erected sanctuary
lets us pleasantly celebrate.

|
Unendlich großer Gott,
ach wende dich zu uns,
zu dem erwähleten Geschlechte,
und zum Gebete deiner Knechte!
Ach, laß vor dich
durch ein inbrünstig Singen
der Lippen Opfer bringen!
Wir weihen unsre Brust dir offenbar
zum Dankaltar.
Du, den kein Haus, kein Tempel faßt,
da du kein Ziel noch Grenzen hast,
laß dir dies Haus gefällig sein,
es sei dein Angesicht ein wahrer Gnadenstuhl,
ein Freudenlicht. |
Infinitely great God,
ah, turn yourself toward us,
unto the elect generation
and unto the petition of your servants!
Oh, let our lips’ offering
through reverent singing
be brought before you!
We openly consecrate our breast [as home]
for you at the altar of thanks.
You, whom no house nor temple confines,
for you have neither limit nor boundary,
let this house be pleasing to you,
may it be for your countenance
a true throne of grace, a light of joy. |

wird in keine Nacht verhüllt,
was des Höchsten heilges Wesen
sich zur Wohnung auserlesen,

Whatever the luminance of the Most High inhabits
will not be cloaked by night,
whatever the Most High’s sacred being
chooses for his dwelling
will not be cloaked by night,
whatever the luminance of the Most High inhabits. |

Wie könnte dir, du höchstes Angesicht,
da dein unendlich helles Licht
bis in verborgne Gründe siehet,
ein Haus gefällig sein?
Es schleicht sich Eitelkeit allhie an allen Enden ein.
Wo deine Herrlichkeit einziehet,
da muß die Wohnung rein
und dieses Gastes würdig sein.
Hier wirkt nichts Menschenkraft,
drum laß dein Auge offenstehen
und gnädig auf uns gehen;
so legen wir in heilger Freude dir
die Farren und die Opfer unsrer Lieder
vor deinem Throne nieder
und tragen dir den Wunsch in Andacht für. |
You supreme countenance,
since your infinitely bright light
shines down even to the deepest bedrock,
how could any house be alluring to you?
Vanity creeps in anyway from all sides.
Wherever your splendor settles in
there the dwelling must be pure
and worthy of this guest.
Here manpower is of no matter,
thus let your eyes remain open
and proceed mercifully unto us;
thus with divine joy we lay before you,
like fatted calves, our songs
as the offering at your throne,
and bear before you this wish in devotion. |

Hilf, Gott, daß es uns gelingt,
und dein Feuer in uns dringt,
daß es auch in dieser Stunde
wie in Esaiae Munde
seiner Wirkung Kraft erhält
und uns heilig vor dich stellt. |
Help God, that we succeed
in letting your fire pervade us,
that also in this hour,
like once it did in the mouth of Isaiah,
it conveys its power of inspiration
and presents us sanctified before you. |

Heilger Geist ins Himmels Throne,
gleicher Gott von Ewigkeit
mit dem Vater und dem Sohne,
der Betrübten Trost und Freud!
Allen Glauben, den ich find,
hast du in mir angezündt,
über mir in Gnaden walte,
ferner deine Gnad erhalte.
Deine Hilfe zu mir sende,
o du edler Herzensgast!
und das gute Werk vollende,
das du angefangen hast.
Blas in mir das Fünklein auf,
bis daß nach vollbrachtem Lauf
ich den Auserwählten gleiche
und des Glaubens Ziel erreiche. |
Holy Spirit upon heaven’s throne,
equally God in eternity
with the Father and the Son,
comfort and joy to the sorrowful!
All the faith that I can muster
you have kindled within me,
presiding over me in grace
as long as your grace endures.
Send to me your aid,
O, you noble guest of my heart!
and complete the good work
which you have begun.
Blow upon the spark within me
until I, having completed the course,
am akin to the favored few
and accomplish the goal of faith. |

Ihr Heiligen, erfreuet euch,
eilt, eilet, euren Gott zu loben:
das Herze sei erhoben
zu Gottes Ehrenreich,
von dannen er auf dich,
du heilge Wohnung,
siehet und ein gereinigt Herz zu sich
von dieser eitlen Erde ziehet.
Ein Stand, so billig selig heißt,
man schaut hier Vater, Sohn und Geist.
Wohlan, ihr gotterfüllte Seelen!
ihr werdet nun das beste Teil erwählen;
die Welt kann euch kein Labsal geben,
ihr könnt in Gott allein vergnügt und selig leben. |
You saints, rejoice,
hasten, hasten to praise your God:
may the heart be elevated
up to God’s realm of glory,
whence he watches over you,
you sacred dwelling place,
and extracts a purified heart
out of this idle earth.
A standing so easy called blessed,
here one regards Father, Son and Spirit.
So then, you God-filled souls!
you will now select the finest portion;
the world can offer you no refreshment,
you can in God alone live content and blessed. |

BAß
Kann wohl ein Mensch zu Gott im Himmel steigen?
SOPRAN
Der Glaube kann den Schöpfer zu ihm neigen.
BAß
Er ist oft ein zu schwaches Band.
SOPRAN
Gott führet selbst und stärkt
des Glaubens Hand, den Fürsatz zu erreichen.
BAß
Wie aber, wenn des Fleisches Schwachheit
wollte weichen?
SOPRAN
Des Höchsten Kraft wird mächtig in den Schwachen.
BAß
Die Welt wird sie verlachen.
SOPRAN
Wer Gottes Huld besitzt,
verachtet solchen Spott.
BAß
Was wird ihr außer diesem fehlen!
SOPRAN
Ihr einzger Wunsch, ihr alles ist in Gott.
BAß
Gott ist unsichtbar und entfernet:
SOPRAN
Wohl uns, daß unser Glaube lernet,
im Geiste seinen Gott zu schauen.
BAß
ihr Leib hält sie gefangen.
SOPRAN
Des Höchsten Huld befördert ihr Verlangen,
denn er erbaut den Ort,
da man ihn herrlich schaut.

Da er den Glauben nun belohnt
und bei uns wohnt, bei uns als seinen Kindern,
so kann die Welt und Sterblichkeit die Freude nicht vermindern. |
BASS
Can a person really climb up to God in heaven?
SOPRANO
Faith can incline the creator down to him.
BASS
The bond [of faith] is often too weak.
SOPRANO
God himself directs and empowers
the believing hand to reach the goal.
BASS
What if the weakness of the flesh
starts to slacken?
SOPRANO
Most High’s power is mighty in weakness.
BASS
The world will laugh at them.
SOPRANO
Whoever possesses God’s favor,
defies such ridicule.
BASS
So much beyond this fails them!
SOPRANO
Their sole wish, their everything is in God.
BASS
God is invisible and remote:
SOPRANO
Well for us that our faith instructs
us to view God through the Spirit.
BASS
the body holds them captive.
SOPRANO
The Most High’s favor fulfills their desires,
for he edified this site
where one can behold him in splendor.
BASS, SOPRANO
Where he now rewards faith
and will dwell with us, with us as his children,
thus the world and mortality cannot diminish our joy. |

O wie wohl ist uns geschehn,
daß sich Gott ein Haus ersehn!
Schmeckt und sehet doch zugleich,
Gott sei freundlich gegen euch.
Schüttet eure Herzen aus
hier vor Gottes Thron und Haus! |
O how well it has transpired for us
that God desires this house!
Do taste and see at once
how kind God is to you.
Pour out your hearts
here before God’s throne and house! |

Wohlan demnach, du heilige Gemeine,
bereite dich zur heilgen Lust!
Gott wohnt nicht nur in einer jeden Brust,
er baut sich hier ein Haus.
Wohlan, so rüstet euch
mit Geist und Gaben aus,
daß ihm sowohl dein Herz
als auch dies Haus gefalle! |
Now then accordingly, you saintly congregation,
prepare yourself for saintly bliss!
God not only dwells in each and every breast,
he builds himself here a house.
Now then, thus furniyourselves
with spirit and gifts,
that your heart might please him
as does this house! |

hilf selbst das Beste raten;
den Anfang, Mittl und Ende,
ach, Herr, zum besten wende!
Mit Segen mich beschütte,

Say yes to my deeds,
provide the best counsel yourself;
beginning, middle and ending,
oh, Lord, change for the better!
Shower me with blessing,
may my heart be your lodge,
may your word be my fare,
until I journey up to heaven! |
