Marcus Ullmann (Tenor)

Born: 1967 - Dresden, Saxony, Germany

The German tenor, Marcus [or Markus] Ullmann, grew up in Dresden and became a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor which developed such voices as bass-baritone Theo Adam and tenor Peter Schreier. Ullmann remained at the Dresden Kreuzchor for ten years and entered the Dresden Music Academy in 1986. After graduating with honors in every single department, "Lieder", "Choral Work", "Opera", he entered master-classes of several noteworthy artists, among others, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Aldo Baldin, and Theo Adam. After winning first prize at the International Dvorak Competition in the Czech Republic in 1992, engagements throughout Germany were soon followed by engagements in The Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Italy, France, Israel, and also in the USA.

These concerts mark Marcus Ullmann's debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Recent career highlights include appearances in choral works with orchestras such as the Bamberger Symphoniker, Dresden Staatskapelle, Jerusalem Symphony, Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Capella Real in Madrid, Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg, Munich Philharmonic, Stuttgarter Bach-Orchester, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington), and Houston Symphony Orchestra.

Marcus Ullmann performs often under the baton of Helmuth Rilling, recently appearing in J.S. Bach's St. Matthews Passion (BWV 244) in Washington D.C. as well as in Salzburg in George Frideric Handel's Messiah. He appeared with Peter Schreier and the Jerusalem Symphony and during the Savonlinna Festival in Haydn's The Seasons. Peter Schreier was his conductor at the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig for J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245). His debut at the Prague Spring festival was in May 2000, again under Peter Schreier's baton.
