St Matthew Passion from St Thomas Leipzig Live on TV |

Friday Night the St Matthew Passion of Bach was recorded for TV from Leipzig with its famous St Thomas Choir, who celebrate its 800th birthday this year. For some month the Passion will be available at the internet page of the French-German TV Channel ARTE, even if I'm not sure if it will work everywhere: Arte Channel
I can higly recomend this outstanding performance with an excelent choir and great solist. Four of five male Soloists are former choir boys from Leipzig including talentent 19yo Alto Stefan Kahle who finished school last year and is studiing singing in Basel (Switzerland) now, the Lattke brothers (both tenor and members of the A-capella-Group Amacord) and bass Gotthold Schwarz, who is voice teacher of the boys. |

Thank you for this link! This is a marvellous performance which shows a rare glimpse of what Bach's performances might have sounded like.
The entire Passion is performed in the choir loft with the singers and orchestra invisible to the audience. The recording is miked closely but we do get a sense of the feeling of intimate ensemble which such a limited space gives to Renaissance and Baroque music. It would have been fascinating to hear the performance recorded from the floor of the nave.
Although it is not an OVPP performance, the orchestra is smaller than many modern ensembles. The choir is quite large but it is fascinating to hear boys in the soprano and alto parts and very young student tenors and basses. They sing this music with tremendous agility and a very mature commitment. Even the half-dozen boys of the ripieno choir soar across the double-choir and double orchestra.
I found this immensely exciting and moving. |

[To David McKay] Yes, I echo David's sentiments. I will have to look at arte.tv more often to see what they have to offer over time.
As for this particular performance, I had reservations about a couple of the soloists, but found it greatly enjoyable overall.
If there are other places on the net that offer such performances would people please post about them? This was a revelation. |
