Lotte Wolf-Matthäus (Contralto) |
Born: April 8, 1908 - Brünlos/Erzgebirge, Thuringia, Germany
Died: November 1979 - Ilten, near Hannover, Germany |
The German contralto, Lotte Wolf-Matthäus, studied from 1926 to 1930 with Ilse Helling-Rosenthal in Leipzig.
In 1930 Lotte [Charlotte] Wolf-Matthäus began her career as concert and oratorio singer. She undertook extended concert tours, which brought her to the music centres in Germany as well as abroad. She proved herself above all as a splendid J.S. Bach interpreter, but also as interpreter of the music of the Baroque era. She appeared often as soloist with the Thomanerchor Leipzig. In 1938 she sang in Paris the alto part in Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach. She resumed her career after the World War II, through radio programmes, which were broadcast by German stations, especially the NWDR Cologne, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Munich, Leipzig and other radio stations. She participated in the productions the cantatas of J.S. Bach, which brought some of the well-known cantatas to the public. The artist lived in Ilten near Hannover.
Recordings: Her voice can be heard particularly on the labels of Telefunken (Works by J.S. Bach, Heinrich Schütz, Georg Philipp Telemann, Monteverdi), Cantate and on other record labels. |
