The English tenor, John Boiwley, began his musical career as a chorister at Worcester Cathedral, and went on to sing at King's College, Cambridge as a choral scholar while studying for his degree in music. He left there to train as a post graduate at the Royal College of Music and after several years working as a freelance singer, joined the BBC Singers in 2003.
John Bowley is an accomplished tenor, having appeared both as soloist and chorister with many of the most important orchestras and choirs on today's concert platform. His career on the concert platform has taken him all over the world, singing in Japan, Australia, South Africa, USA and all over Europe with many of the most significant conductors such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Simon Rattle, Gianandrea Noseda and Harry Christophers. His work has spanned all styles, from his numerous plainchant recordings, Baroque and classical concerts with repertoire from J.S. Bach's Passions to Verdi's Requiem, then the challenging and exciting contemporary music that he performed whilst at the BBC.
Most recently John Bowley has sung Look and Bow Down by Alan Charlton, (World Premiere) Barbican Hall, London, a recital in the Pietermaritzburg International Festival, South Africa, Igor Stravinsky's Canticum Sacrum in the QEH, Verdi's Requiem at Reading University Great Hall, Bristol Cathedral and for Colchester Choral Society, The Dream of Gerontius at the National University of Ireland, Dublin. He has also broadcast Messiah on BBC Radio 3 and performed Messiah with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in Symphony Hall. Other recent concerts include Verdi's Requiem in Selby Abbey, Haydn's The Creation in the Royal Albert Hall and J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244), both conducted by Sir David Willcocks, several performances of Edward Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius and of E. Elgar's The Kingdom and the St John Passion (BWV 245) in Ireland and Norway. Other overseas engagements include Tavener's The Apocalypse in the Megaron in Athens, B Minor Mass (BWV 232) in Madrid with Adrian Davis and the 'Orquesta Y Coro Sociedad Bach' and with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, Judas Maccabaeus in Vilnius, Lithuania, with Nicholas McGegan and George Frideric Handel's Samson in Darmstadt with the 'Konzertchor Darmstadt'. He joined Wokingham Choral Society at Reading University Great Hall on March 21, 2009 to sing the Evangelist in J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245). |
