Motets BWV 225-230
Conducted by Diego Fasolis
Recording
Motets directed by Fasolis
Riccardo Nughes wrote (February 19, 2002):
I've just seen in the shops a new recording of Bach Motets; the ensemble "I barocchisti" directed by Diego Fasolis . The cd contains the ARTS label catalogue.
Harry J. Steinman wrote (February 20, 2002):
[To Riccardo Nughes] Fasolis includes BWV 225, "Singet dem Herrn..." in his 1994 recording of the Magnificat (BWV 243) (Arts 47374) along with BWV 21. I really enjoyed what he did. I don't have the vocabulary to tell you why I enjoy it, other than to say that he permits his choruses a dramatic liberty (in terms of accenting and 'punctuating' certain words and phrases) that I would not expect to find in other than a OVPP rendition.
So, if the new recording is as good as or better than what's on the 1994 recording, I bet you'll enjoy it. I know I would. Home to see your review soon.
Fasolis recording of motets 225-230
Bradley Lehman wrote (June 22, 2004):
Thank you to the several members who a few months ago recommended the Diego Fasolis recording of Bach's motets BWV 225-230. I ordered the disc on the basis of those endorsements, and am very happy to have it. Such beautiful musicianship!
The disc is Arts 47573:

Bach Motets, Fasolis
John Pike wrote (April 12, 2005):
I read recommendations for this recording last year, from Uri and Brad I think. I have now got round to buying it.
I used to be not very keen on the motets, mainly I suspect because the few recordings I had had poor intonation and were not very interesting to listen to, but this could not be more different. I have been listening to it incessantly and it is just GLORIOUS. This is how I imagine Heaven; JSP conducting these motets with singing like this, as everyone sits around worshipping God. Sorry to get carried away but this really is FANTASTIC.
The tempi, articulation, phrasing, intonation are all sublime. Hard to imagine anyone doing it better.
If you don't have it, go and get it now and spend the rest of the next few days wallowing in it!
Uri Golomb wrote (April 12, 2005):
[To John Pike] Thanks for the recommendation! I'm sure you didn't hear about this recording from me -- I don't know it yet.. perhaps I gave a positive reference to Fasolis's B minor Mass (BWV 232), the only Bach recording of his that I know so far. (I do have a CD in which he conducts Händel's Dixit Dominus and Vivaldi's Gloria, which was attached to BBC Music Magazine a few years back; brilliant, dramatic and strongly-characterised performances).
Bradley Lehman wrote (April 12, 2005):
[To John Pike] Agreed, really beautiful. It's from December 2000. Incidentally there's also an earlier Fasolis recording of "Singet dem Herrn" (motet BWV 225) from 1994; fills up the program of the Magnificat (D) (BWV 243) and cantata BWV 21. Eight singers in 1994, more in 2000; almost the same tempos both times. Most of the singers from 1994 are still part of the group in 2000. The music sounds brilliant both ways.
Just got Fasolis's disc of Beethoven folk songs a few days ago, delightful bits with fortepiano trio (Andrea Marcon et al).... Fun album in various languages and dialects: English, Italian, Scots, Latin, German, and donkey. The canon "Es muss sein" in track 26 is the theme that Beethoven used also in the late quartet. Got this from the deep sale going on at: http://www.cybermusicsurplus.com/
and its parent site: http://www.allegro-music.com/
I haven't yet met a Fasolis recording of anything where I was disappointed. Excellent musicianship! Magnificat (BWV 243), BWV 21, SJP (BWV 245), motets, BMM (BWV 232), Palestrina, Furstenau, Durante, Carissimi's "Jonas" et al.... Earlier remarks:

Anybody have an update on that marvelous rec of Bach orchestral suites, by Fasolis, that was with the Italian magazine? Is there a separate release of that on the way? It also has cantatas BWV 205 and BWV 110. Riccardo mentioned that rec in December: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/BachCantatas/message/11125
Any kind soul in Europe willing to pick up a copy of that magazine issue & discs from: http://www.aseweb.it/musica_classica_amadeus.htm?year=2004
and sell/ship it to me for some fair price between ?20 and ?25 (total)? It says the issue itself costs ?11.95 and then their American shipping options are all over ?20 additional, ugh. Slower and cheaper transit would be just fine with me, as long as it avoids mushing the package.
