Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe,
Friede auf Erden
und den Menschen ein Wohlgefallen. |
Glory be to God on high,
peace upon earth
and goodwill to humanity. |

2. ARIA |
|
Erzählet, ihr Himmel, die Ehre Gottes,
ihre Feste, verkündet seine Macht.
Doch vergesset nicht dabei
seine Liebe, seine Treu,
die er an denen Verlornen vollbracht. |
Proclaim, you heavens, the glory of God,
you firmament, declare his might.
Indeed do not thereby forget
his love, his faithfulness,
which he has accomplished for those lost. |

O! Liebe, der kein Lieben gleich:
der hochgelobte Gottessohn
verläßt sein Himmelreich;
ein Prinz verläßt den Königsthron
und wird ein Knecht
und als ein armer Mensch geboren,
damit das menschliche Geschlecht
nicht ewig sei verloren;
was wird denn dir,
mein treuer Jesus, nun dafür? |
O! love, unlike any other love:
the dearly beloved Son of God
abandons his realm of heaven;
a prince abandons the kingly throne
and becomes a servant
and is born as meager human,
so that the human race
might not be forever lost;
what do you then require now for this
my devoted Jesus? |

O du angenehmer Schatz,
hebe dich aus denen Krippen
nimm dafür auf meinen Lippen
und in meinem Herzen Platz. |
O you affable treasure,
lift yourself out of the manger
and take up your place instead
upon my lips and in my heart. |

Das Kind ist mein, und ich bin sein,
du bist mein alles unter allen
und außer dir soll mir kein Gut,
kein Kleinod wohlgefallen.
In Mangel hab ich Überfluß,
in Leide hab ich Freude,
bin ich krank, so heilt er mich,
bin ich schwach, so trägt er mich,
bin ich verirrt, so sucht er mich,
und wenn ich falle, hält er mich,
ja, wenn ich endlich sterben muß,
so bringt er mich zum Himmelsleben.
Geliebter Schatz, durch dich wird mir
noch auf der Welt der Himmel selbst gegeben. |
This child is mine, and I am his,
you are my all among all else
and besides you no goods,
no jewel shall please me.
While lacking I have abundance,
while suffering I have joy,
if I am sick, then he heals me,

hold on to you, O Jesus,
even if the world suddenly should
fracture into a thousand pieces.
O Jesus, for you, only you,
