English Translation

1

Ich freue mich in dir
Und heiße dich willkommen,
Mein liebstes Jesulein;
Du hast dir vorgenommen,
Mein Brüderlein zu sein.
Ach, wie ein süßer Ton!
Wie freundlich sieht er aus,
Der große Gottessohn!

I rejoice in you
and bid you welcome,
my dearest little Jesus;
you have resolved
to be my little brother.
Ah! what a sweet sound!
How friendly he looks,
the great son of God!

2

Gott senkt die Majestät,
Sein unbegreiflich Wesen,
In eines Menschen Leib;
Nun muß die Welt genesen.
Der allerhöchste Gott
Spricht freundlich bei mir ein,
Wird gar ein kleines Kind
Und heißt mein Jesulein.

God lowers his majesty,
his incomprehensible being,
into a human body;
now the world must grow better.
The most high God
speaks as a friend with me,
he even becomes a small child
and is called my little Jesus.

3

Wie lieblich klingt es mir,
Wie schallt es in die Ohren!
Es kann durch Stahl und Erz
Und harte Felsen bohren,
Das liebste Jesulein.
Wer Jesum recht erkennt,
Der stirbt nicht, wenn er stirbt,
Sobald er Jesum nennt.

How dear this [name] sounds to me,
how it resounds in my ears!
It can pierce through steel and bronze
and hard rock,
my dearest little Jesus.
The person who rightly knows Jesus
does not die when he dies,
as soon as he names Jesus.

4

Wohlan, so will ich mich
An dich, o Jesu, halten,
Und sollte gleich die Welt
In tausend Stücke spalten.
O Jesu, dir, nur dir,
Dir leb' ich ganz allein,
Auf dich, allein auf dich,
Mein Jesu, schlaf' ich ein.

Come then, I want
to cling to you, o Jesus,
even if the world at once
were to split in a thousand pieces.
O Jesus, for you, only for you,
for you alone may I live,
inyou, alone in you,
my Jesus, may I sleep.
