KOOPMAN Vol. 14
Ehud Shiloni wrote (January 15, 2004):
Last week - a celebration: Volume #14 of Koopman's cantatas is playing non-stop on my car CD.
This volume covers the conclusion of the second ["chorale"] cycle [BWV 178, 26, 123 and 125], and goes on with BWV 6, 42, 74 and 68 - almost all of which are high-caliber pieces, with some top-notch masterpieces. Koopman, in my impression, is getting better with time, and I found almost everything on this set to be delightful and exciting. The noteworthy singer - most alto parts are performed by Bogna Bartosz, whose voice and delivery I like more and more with each additional hearing.
The sets also includes a rarity - BWV 1045 - "Konzertsatz in D" - presumably an introductory sinfonia for a lost cantata from the 1740's.
Two highlights:
1. The opening chorus of BWV 6 - a personal favorite: an excellent performance, by any standard.
2. BWV 42 - movement 4 - Choral with Soprano-Tenor duet: An alternative version with a Double-Bass[!!] "obligato". A very special, highly satisfying effect.
Overall: Highly recommended.
And, finally: Please do not forget that Koopman is releasing these new sets on his own, personal label ["Antoine Marchand"], and you can easily imagine the financial implications. I implore all of you who are easier on the budget, to consider supporting Koopman's endeavor by buying the newly released sets. Remember the cowardly Warner's decision to discontinue the series, and help Koopman with maintaing the legacy of Sebastian's music.
