The Canadian baritone, Matthew Zadow, was born into an family of amateur singers and musicians; he studied piano, guitar, trombone and singing as a teenager, and was a frequent actor on the stage. Still he began his university studies in science, only switching to formal music study in his last year, when he began his vocal studies with fellow Canadian baritone Bruce Kelly, first at Queen's University in Kingston and subsequently in Toronto. He also studied in France with Pierre Fleta.
Matthew Zadow enjoys a growing international reputation as a compelling interpreter of opera, oratorio and concert repertoire, with recent debuts at Brussels' Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie in Verdi’s La Traviata and Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles as Masetto in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni and Orff's Carmina Burana, and with de Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam as Baron Wurmerhelm in Prokofiev’s The Gambler.
Recent opera roles include Eisenstein in J. Strauss' Die Fledermaus, Almaviva in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, General Boum in Offenbach's La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein, Danilo in Lehar's The Merry Widow, Belcore in Donizetti's l’Elisir d’Amore, Dancaïro in Georges Bizet's Carmen, Baron Douphol in Verdi's La Traviata, Cristiano in Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera, and Le Chat/L'Horloge Comtoise in Ravel's l’Enfant et les Sortileges.
Much in demand internationally as a concert artist, Matthew Zadow has appeared in Canada, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and China, performing virtually all of the major oratorio and concert repertoire for the solo baritone and bass voice ranging from the Baroque to Contemporary periods, and as a disciple of the art song tradition he has frequently interpreted Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’Eté, Schubert’s Die Schöne Müllerin, Gustav Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Johannes Brahms' Vier ernste Gesänge, and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel and Five Mystical Songs.
His J.S. Bach performances include the solo cantata Ich will den Kreutzstab gerne tragen BWV 56, Magnificat (BWV 243), Mass in B minor (BWV 232), Himmelfahrts-Oratorium (BWV 11) with the Melos ensemble under conductor David Cameron, Kingston; Cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die stimme BWV 140 and the Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) with Toronto’s Stephanie Martin and Pax Christi Chorale, and with conductor Howard Dyck in Toronto, and also in Deurne (Antwerp) with the Orkest La Passione and conductor Marleen de Boo, and with Emile Engel in Zieuwent, Netherlands. He performed the arias in Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) with Antwerp’s Jaak Gregoor and Vocaal Collectief, and the role of Christus in Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) with Paul Dinneweth and Musica Nova Antwerp. He performed arias in Matthaus-Passion (BWV 244) with Octopus Ensemble and conductor Bart Van Reyn in Sint-Niklaas, with Chorale Caecilia (now: deCHORALE) and conductor Paul Dinneweth in Antwerp, and with Helicon, the Orchestre La Passione, and conductor Geert Hendrix in Lier.
Matthew Zadow has performed J.S. Bach's Clavierübungen, composed and conductedd by Wouter Dekoninck who added the original Lutheran chorale texts on top and built vocal scores based on the text and music.
