The German counter-tenor, Franz Vitzthum, received his first musical training with the Regensburger Domspatzen. He studied first privately with the Gabriele Kaiser und Florian Mayr (Munich), and since October 2001 he studies with Kai Wessel at the Hochschule für Musik in Köln. In 1997 he became 1st Winner at the Federal competition "Jugend musiziert ". In 1999 he received the Julius-F.–Neumüller scholarship of the Regensburg State, and in 2003 the Tostmann Prize of Austria Barock Akademie.
Besides ensemble work (e.g. La Capella Ducale, Roland Wilson, Weser Renaissance, Manfred Cordes; Cantus Cölln, Konrad Junghänel), Franz Vitzthum dedicates himself predominantly to engagements as a soloist in his homeland and abroad. Within the chamber music range he appears regularly with the Zithervirtuosin Gertrud Wittkowsky. With the flute ensemble Flautando Köln he produced in 2002 a Weihnachts CD for Ars Musici label.
Franz Vitzthum has given guest performances been with international festivals, such as Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz, IYAP Early Music Antwerp, Oude Muziek Festival Utrecht and made music with Baroque orchestras such as the Kammerorchester Basel and the English Concert.
In 2003 Franz Vitzthum appeared at the Theaterakademie des Prinzregententheaters in Munich in the role of the Devil in the opera Scherz, Satire, Ironie und tiefere Bedeutung by Detlev Glanert. The same year he appeared at the Händelfestspiele in Göttingen under the direction of Nicholas McGegan in the oratorio Jephta (Hamor). |
