The Dutch choir and orchestra conductor, Gerrit Maas, studied musicology at Universiteit Utrecht and orchestral conducting with Lucas Vis at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He also took conducting lessons with Jos Vermunt and Johan Rooze, and master-classes with Helmuth Rilling, Georg Grün and Jorma Panula, among others.
Gerrit Maas made his conducting debut at the age of 17, when he conducted a school performance of W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. In 2009 he concluded his conservatory studies with two performances of L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. His repertoire includes many major oratorios, such as George Frideric Handel's Joshua and Orff's Carmina Burana. He performed the Requiems by W.A. Mozart, Gabriel Fauré, Verdi, Camille Saint-Saëns and Maurice Duruflé with musicology students from Universiteit Utrecht. The music of J.S. Bach occupies a special place in his work. In addition to the monthly Utrechtse Bachcantatediensten, he has also conducted performances of J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor BWV 232, Johannes-Passion BWV 245, Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 and Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248 with various choirs and orchestras. His reconstruction of Markus-Passion BWV 247 premiered in 2013. In addition to the major works, he likes to work with chamber choirs. He is particularly interested in Renaissance music and more recent music from the Slavic language area and the Baltic States.
Gerrit Maas is the permanent conductor of the Domstad Jeugdorkest, Vocaal Ensemble Kwarts in Haarlem (since January 2010) and of Christelijke Oratorium Vereniging Zaanstreek. He is choir director of the Leids Studenten Koor, Kamerkoor en Orkest Collegium Musicum Leiden and Algemeen Gemengd Koor Vocalise (since August 2011) and is also conductor of the Utrechtse Bachcantatediensten at the Geertekerk (since 2013) .
