Vocaal Ensemble Kwarts was founded in 1989 by 8 amateur singers from Haarlem. The first years they rehearsed without a conductor between the sliding doors at home. Later Cor Brandenburg acted as accompanist and conductor, succeeded by Gilles Michels in 1992. In the following years, Kwarts grew into a chamber choir of 17 members. In 1996 Christiaan Winter was appointed conductor. After 13 years under his leadership, Kwarts has set out on a new course since January 2010 with the young conductor Gerrit Maas. Kwarts has already given some beautiful performances with him.
As a type of stone, Vocaal Ensemble Kwarts mainly evokes associations with beauty, purity and clarity. A striking symbol that represents the source of inspiration and the aspiration of the ensemble. Kwarts wants to discover and perform a broad musical spectrum. In the more than 25 years that the ensemble has existed, a rich repertoire has been built up, originating from various style periods. This diversity can also be heard in the performances of Kwarts: a cappella, accompanied by a few instruments or with a Baroque ensemble fully set. The hand of Gerrit Maas can certainly be recognized in this, who has been associated with Kwarts as a conductor since 2010. Kwarts' concerts are often programmed around a theme. Each concert has its own atmosphere and is always surprising in character. |
