Andreas Küppers (Conductor, Harpsichord, Organ)

Born: Wetzlar, Hesse, Germany

The German conductor, harpsichordist and organist, Andreas Küppers, first studied piano with Professor Catherine Vickers and Professor Sibylle Cada, then historical interpretation practice harpsichord/fortepiano with Professor Harald Hoeren and Wiebke Weidanz at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main. Other teachers included Professor Jörg-Andreas Bötticher (Basel) and Michael Behringer (Freiburg). In addition, he attended courses with Professor Jesper Christensen (Basel). From 2006 to 2015, he fulfilled a teaching assignment at the HfMDK Frankfurt. Several master-classes (Musikhochschule Würzburg/ Conservatory Gent etc.) complete his pedagogical profile.

Andreas Küppers has worked as René Jacobs' musical assistant since 2011. He also has a lively collaboration with Thomas Hengelbrock. He has been engaged several times as musical assistant and harpsichordist/pianist for international music productions at the Staatsoper Berlin, the Theater an der Wien, the Ruhrtriennale, the Frankfurt Opera, La Monnaie Brussels Opera House, the Opéra Garnier in Paris and the Aixen-Provence Festival.

Andreas Küppers is a permanent member of the B'Rock Orchestra Gent, the Balthasar-Neumann Ensemble (Director: Thomas Hengelbrock) and the La Folia Baroque Orchestra. With the B'Rock Orchestra, he also serves as artistic director of the newly founded B'Rock Vocal Consort. He has played as harpsichordist and pianist with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Freiburger Barockorchester, Staatskapelle Berlin, Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Frankfurt Museum Orchestra, Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, and has worked with Fabio Biondi, among others. He has worked with Fabio Biondi, Teodor Currentzis, Michael Hofstetter, Ton Koopman, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Christophe Coin, Ivor Bolton, Louis Langrée, Michael Schneider, Jérémie Rhorer, Andrea Marcon, Steven Isserlis, Julian Steckel, Maurice Steger and Dorothee Oberlinger.

Numerous CD recordings with renowned conductors, soloists and orchestras bear witness to Andreas Küppers's active artistic work, be it various productions under the direction of René Jacobs, participation in projects with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the Freiburger Barockorchester, several releases with Hille Perl and Lee Santana, the fruitful collaboration with Kristin von der Goltz, or recordings with the Balthasar-Neumann Ensemble, the B'Rock Orchestra and the La Folia Baroque Orchestra. As conductor of his ensemble Teatro del Mondo, he has appeared at the Rheingau Music Festival, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Music Festival, the Rhein-Vokal Festival, the Beethovenfest Bonn and the Young Euro Classic Festival Berlin, and has worked successfully with Gottfried von der Goltz, Bernhard Forck, Mayumi Hirasaki, Hille Perl, Sibylla Rubens, Klaus Mertens and the Tölzer Knabenchor, among others. Recordings with Julian Prégardien, Robin Johannsen and Sunhae Im have been enthusiastically received by critics („ Terrific improvisatory flair.“/BBC Magazine. „It is noticeable that Andreas Küppers has worked with René Jacobs many times. In 2022, two recordings with the vocal Ensemble Polyharmonique, which he leads, and works by A. Cesti and from the Bach family will be released by CPO. Furthermore, a CD production with Sunhae Im and J.S. Bach's Cantata Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten (BWV 202) under his direction is planned for this year, as well as the recording of the cello sonatas by F. Geminiani with Kristin von der Goltz and Hille Perl. As part of a recording with Julie Fuchs and the Balthasar-Neumann Ensemble under Thomas Hengelbrock, Andreas Küppers will take the fortepiano solo in W.A. Mozart's concert aria Ch‘io mi scordi di te. As artistic director and conductor of the Dutch ensemble Ribattuta Musica (choir+orchestra), he has realised programmes with the great sacred works of J.S. Bach and George Frideric Handel, but also smaller productions with sacred and secular works by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and the soprano Lenneke Ruiten, or with works from the library of J.S. Bach with the mezzo-soprano Olivia Vermeulen.
