The American tenor, Andrew Fuchs, studied at Odessa High in Odessa, Missouri (Class of 2003). He received his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Kansas (2007); and his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Stony Brook University (2009). He completed his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree in Vocal Performance from Stony Brook University (2013). In addition, he was Young Artist at Seagle Music Colony (2006, 2007); participasted in Professional Singer Program at SongFest (2008); was Finalist at Liederkranz Competition (Art Song Division) (2013) and Joy In Singing Competition (2015); Tenor Participant at Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar (2013); Vocal Fellow at Tanglewood Music Center (2012, 2013).
Andrew Fuchs recently made his Lincoln Center debut in J.S. Bach’s Magnificat (BWV 243) with the American Classical Orchestra. The music of J.S. Bach has come to play a central role in his up-and-coming career, and he has excelled in his interpretations of the Evangelist in both St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) (Saint Andrew Chorale, Canticum Novum Singers) and St. John Passion (BWV 245) (Saint Andrew Chorale): “Fuchs made the Evangelist fully human and...served with exceptional skill” (TheaterScene). He is also a member of the Trinity Wall Street Choir where he is a frequent soloist on their Bach at One series at St. Paul's Chapel.
Recent solo performances include Steve Reich’s Three Tales with Ensemble Signal at Disney Hall, presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Johannes Brahms’ Liebeslieder and Neue Liebeslieder Waltzes with the Mark Morris Dance Group, the world premiere of Alexander Goehr's Verschwindenes Wort for The Juilliard School's Focus Festival, Misael in Benjamin Britten’s The Burning Fiery Furnace and Tristan in Frank Martin's Le Vin Herbé with Ballet-Opéra-Pantomime (Montreal), Purcell and W.A. Mozart with Berkshire Choral International, and appearances with ARTEK (Director: Gwendolyn Toth), Lyric Fest, and the Greenwich Choral Society.
An avid recitalist, Andrew Fuchs spent two summers as a Vocal Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center. While there, he worked closely with Dawn Upshaw, Håkan Hagegård, and Mark Morris. A 2015 Joy In Singing Finalist, he also was in the Professional Singers Program at SongFest, was a Finalist in the 2013 Liederkranz Competition (Art Song Division), and was one of six singers selected to participate in the 2013 Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar, a week-long program that focuses on American art song by living composers, led by Stephanie Blythe and Alan Louis Smith. Andrew is especially passionate about American song, and his final doctoral recital concentrated on 20th and 21st-century Midwestern composers including Virgil Thomson, Christopher Berg, Larry Alan Smith, Libby Larsen, and Ned Rorem.
Andrew Fuchs is also a sought-after professional choral/ensemble singer, frequently performing with the Trinity Wall Street Choir, the Saint Thomas Choir of Men & Boys, the Grammy-nominated ensemble New York Polyphony, the New York Virtuoso Singers, Musica Sacra, and Clarion Music Society.
Andrew Fuchs' operatic credits encompass roles primarily from the Baroque and Classical repertoire, but also extend to the 20th and 21st centuries. They include Belmonte in W.A. Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Ferrando in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte, Acis in Acis and Galatea, Zotico in Cavalli’s Eliogabalo, the title role in Peter Winkler’s Fox Fables (New York premiere at Symphony Space), Carissimi’s Jephte, Tom Rakewell in abridged performances of Igor Stravinsky's The Rake’s Progress, and Tonio in scenes from La fille du régiment. He spent two summers at the Seagle Music Colony where his roles included Will Parker in Oklahoma!, Lank Hawkins in Crazy For You, and he was a principal singer in workshop performances of Stephen Schwartz’s Séance on a Wet Afternoon.
Upcoming performances include appearances with Pegasus Early Music in a program of Barbara Strozzi, Steve Reich's Daniel Variations and You Are with Ensemble Signal to celebrate Reich's 80th birthday, Spire Chamber Ensemble, a tour to Russia with the Clarion Music Society to premiere Maximilian Steinberg's Passion Week, Monteverdi madrigals with ARTEK in Berkeley, and a recital with oboist Scott Bartucca on the Music on Madison series in New York City.
