Julia Doyle (Soprano)

Born: Lancaster, England

The English soprano, Julia Doyle, was born and educated in Lancaster, in the North of England. She read Social and Political Sciences as a choral scholar at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge (Cambridge University), before pursuing a career in singing.

Having been in great demand as a consort singer with all of the UK’s leading vocal ensembles for the last few years, (including I Fagiolini, winners of The Royal Philharmonic Society Ensemble Award 2006) Julia Doyle is fast establishing a reputation as a soloist specialising in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, both in the UK and across Europe with a busy schedule of tours, concerts and recording.

Julia Doyle now enjoys a career as a soloist and ensemble singer with many of Europe’s most distinguished conductors and ensembles. She has recently worked with Camerata Salzburg, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Britten Sinfonia, The Hanover Band, English Baroque Soloists, The English Concert and New London Consort, under the batons of conductors such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Roger Norrington. Jeffrey Skidmore, Philip Pickett, David Zinman and Stephen Layton. Recent debuts include Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Verona, Braunschweig and Pisa Cathedrals, The Salle Pleyel, Salle de concerts and Cité de la musique in Paris, Teatro Olympico Rome, The Sage Gateshead, St John’s Smith Square, Symphony Hall Birmingham, Cadogan Hall and the Albert Hall at the BBC Proms.

Recent highlights include: recording of Lutoslawki's Dwadziesci Koled for Sony BMG (BBC Symphony Orchestra / David Zinman); Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah in Poissy and Birmingham (Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment / Jeffrey Skidmore); Purcell's The Fairy Queen at Salzburg Mozarteum (Camerata Salzburg / Sir Roger Norrington); George Frideric Handel's Messiah at St John's Smith Square (Polyphony / Stephen Layton); G.F. Handel's Messiah at Cadogan Hall (The King's Consort / Matthew Halls); Monteverdi's Orfeo (La Musica) on BBC Radio 3 ‘Discovering Music’ from York Early Music Festival; Rameau's Les Boreades & Dardanus (Excerpts) at the BBC Proms, Castor et Pollux (une suivante d’Hébé) at the Salle Pleyel, Paris and François Couperin's Quatre Versets d’un Motet at the Salle de Concerts (English Baroque Soloists / Sir John Eliot Gardiner); Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine at Westminster Cathedral (New London Consort / Martin Baker); J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) at Verona Cathedral, Teatro Olympico Rome & Cadogan Hall London, Advent Cantatas at The Sage Gateshead, Braunschweig Cathedral and Amsterdam Concertgebeouw and BWV 19, BWV 130, BWV 149 & BWV 198 at the Thomaskirche Leipzig, St Elizabeth Church Wroclaw and Pisa Duomo (English Baroque Soloists / John Eliot Gardiner).
