Comment: there is another Wiederau (Saxony), a small village in Saxony, part of the municipality Königshain-Wiederau. No connection to J.S. Bach. |
History |
Wiederau, first mentioned in 1080, was originally a Slavic settlement, which extended later to the ribbon-built village. Basis of the first settlement was the fruitful fields of the river Elster. The environment of the place ranks among the richest historical places of Saxony.
On the area of a medieval castle, by advice of the master of building Gregor Fuchs, was built in the year 1705 the Baroque Castle Wiederau. Double-barrelled stairs characteristic of the Baroque era lead to the Festival Room handing over two projectiles, whose illusionistic ceiling painting is particularly valuable and unique in Saxony.
The townscape today is a special measure, shaped by half timbered houses from the 18th century. Due to the particularly delightful situation in the Elster, Wiederau wins increasingly meaning as housing location. New houses have been built in the last couple of years at Pfarrholz and at Weiher. The village tradition is maintained in the place by three associations, the Culture Association Wiederau, the German Red Cross local's group and the Freiwilligen Feuerwehr. By conveyances from the re-development of villages program Wiederau became for an attractive municipality. |

Bach Connection |
J.S. Bach composed in 1737 a Hommage Cantata Angenehmes Wiederau, freue dich in deinen Auen! (Charming Wiederau, take pleasure in your meadow) BWV 30a for Johann Christian von Hennicke (1681-1752). Hennicke, a favourite of the Dresden court under August the Strong, had been ennobled in 1728 and was now taking possession of the Schloß (castle) in Wiederau. The castle was erected on the former nobleman's estate. The merchant David Fletscher, who came from Leipzig, buit the caste from 1705. On September 28, 1737 J.S. Bach came to the castle of Wiederau to perform the Hommage Cantata. |
